so at the end of the season, it'll be a 3.7M buy out? if he can hang 9-10 wins for this season and next i say keep him, it's cheaper and it lets you throw extra cash at a top tier coach when he retires

So low end, $7.5 million and high end ~$15 million...either way, I see no way, even if we lose the rest of our games this year, that he is fired. If the later figure is true, Miles is at LSU under any scenario through 2012 at a minimum.

I think the contract automatically rolls with every eight win season so it's at 2014 right now, from my understanding but I don't know for sure.

So that would mean he's here until he retires by going 8-4 in the regular season every year??

nope. it's not automatic.

eta: the contract states that "winning eight or more games in a season presumptively will be the basis for a one-year term extension."

the word "presumptively" gives the chancellor the ability to deny it.

This board has been over this issue before ad nauseum.

This is the deal:

He has 3 yrs left on the deal INCLUDING this yr. If he was let go at year's end LSU would owe him two years worth of salary. LSU would have double the remaining contract length in which to pay him. So we have 4 yrs to pay his 2.

Miles has to in good faith seek out employment upon termination. Once employment is gained, LSU only must pay the difference in salary between the jobs.

I did not hear about this O'Keefe business, and I pray it isn't true.

The buyout is no where near 13-15 mil. In fact, rounding up to 4 mil/yr (8 mil total) it would cost LSU about 167000 per month for four yrs if miles did not get a job.

I am unsure if it stipulates he is to receive some up front sum, but I don't think he does.

It is not too costly to buy him out at year's end.

Presumptively means it is not discretionary. In legal terms, it almost means automatic, unless the presumption can be rebutted, i.e., he defaulted under other terms of the contract or he won less than 8 games per year. In other words, the contract automatically rolled over for an additional year in 2008 and 2009 and the current contract expires in 2014. After this year, he has 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 left on his contract.

Elleshoe is not correct or he didn't read the entire contract plus the amendments. The link that Elleshoe provided to the ESPN article was written before the 2008 amendment was approved. The link was factually correct, but made no mention of the 1 year extensions for 8 wins per season.

The March 12, 2008 extension, in Article 3, specifically states:

In exercising the discretion granted in the employment agreement and amendments as to whether to grant a one-year term extension, the Chancellor will be guided by the following:
A. Winning eight or more games in a season presumptively will be the basis for a one-year term extension. [emphasis added]
B. A decision by the Chancellor not to grant a one-year term extension for any reason must be concurred in by the President of the LSD System.[emphasis added]

The key is that if he won 8 games during 2008 and 2009 (which he did), the contract automatically had a one-year extension. If the Chancellor did not want to grant that 1 year extension (because Les won less than 8 games or some other reason), he had to get the approval of the President of the LSU System. Absent that, the Board did not have to approved of his contract extensions!

I am not sure why anyone would state that Les does not currently have a four year contract as long as he keeps winning 8 games per year. Why else would the contract have been amended to increase the maximum buyout from $15M to $18.75M in the April 24, 2008 Board meeting?

Fitting that a man that came to LSU from a government agency (NASA) was the one who structured such a ridiculous contract (length of contract and standard for a successful season - 8 years).

I agree with Salford227 except for one thing: In addition to QB coaching, poised sideline game management is also lacking. QB coaching can make up for part of that, but we also need a coach on the sidelines who can game management. Believe it or not, I don't necessarily think the head coach needs to do that -- but someone does and right now we have nobody.

I'm telling you guys this is The Producers all over again!

If you ever watched The Mel Brooks' The Producers, now you understand why MIles' offense is so fekakt. Les Miles is Max Bialystock.

In The Producers, Bialystock (Mel Brooks) and Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) try to make a fortune by creating the worst Broadway play of all time, Springtime for Hitler. When the show would be forced to close by bad reviews, the producers would get to keep all of the investor shares. But the scheme fails when the play is an unexpected hit.

Miles contract has not been renewed.

And Miles knew it was unlikely he would be able to continue to make $4 million per once people caught onto his kooky coaching.

But he stood to make a fortune if he created the worst offense in the world and LSU would be forced to buy him, paying him upwards of $15 million.

Just like in The Producers, the scheme has backfired with LSU falling bass ackwards into a string of victories, led by incredible performances by PP7, Chad Jones etc. Miles keeps trying to lose these games, but the players somehow keep winning them. No one wonder Miles wants to get Crowton closer to the action for the Florida game.

This explains it!

And I have stated multiple times that those statements are incorrect. I have read the contract, I have been a practicing attorney for 25 years and I have been reviewing and negotiating employment contracts for 25 years, including coaches contracts. Unless there is an amendment that I have not seen since the March 2008 amendment (which is the one published on the internet), the contract expires in 2014.

Because of the "buyout" clause, Coach Miles' contract virtually expires AFTER the 2014 season!!!
