I'm watching the CWS and they were showing the last few back-to-back champs. Made me remember how close the Tigers came to three-peating in 1996-97-98. The 98 team was tearing through the tournament, when the weather changed - a big cold front came through with strong winds blowing in. The Tigers had been hitting homers like crazy, but the wind turned those homers into long fly balls. They got beat twice on the same day and were eliminated. The Championship game was something like 15-13, and that sealed the fate of gorilla ball. Kind of makes me sad watching all this small ball crap.

I'm pretty sure that team set the record for HRs in the CWS, but then it was broken by USC later in the final (which was 21-14). In the first game of the series we hit 8 HRs against USC.

I guess the "purists" love it. They're always talking about how you can really see the "nuances" of the game now. I'll take gorilla ball any day over this boring small ball stuff. I think high scoring games made college baseball so much fun to watch. No lead was safe, no matter how large. Now if you score a couple of runs, and have decent pitching, it's over.

I couldn't remember the final score, but I knew it was crazy high. Now that was college baseball!

That was my first CWS. Got up there and had to go buy clothes and blankets just to be able to go to the games. The hotel clerk was saying how it was a record low for that time of year up there.

Was so pumped up while we were flying through that tournament and having a good time. I've never had a more deflating moment than that day we got kicked out. That drive back was depressing.

College baseball in those few years was a joke. Yes, it was a level playing field, but the rate that baseballs were flying out of the park was just inconceivable. Brandon Larson hit 40 home runs in '97 and had Lance Berkman hit 41. Tell me that isn't just ridiculous.

LSU hit at least 1 home run in every game from the 96 championship game (Warren Morris) til somewhere in the 98 season. Maybe I'm a "purist", but it just shouldn't be like that.

I do agree that the way that the NCAA killed the bats this year is overkill. The way they were from 1999-2010 was perfectly fine, IMO.

Batting practice was a lot of fun to watch, but those bats were going to cause some serious injuries.

Me too - that 1998 team should have won it all. If we had, no team would have topped that three year run for a long, long time.

Absolutely true. USC hit LSU with that sweep mojo like LSU did at ATM years prior.

USC won it by very footballesque score of 21-14 vs ASU..

That game and final score went along ways towards searing into memory and mockery what the game had become..thus change.

Probably was a more balanced era between pitching and hitting...but still not as much fun as gorilla ball.

They need to find a middle ground between last years bats and this years, its so slanted towards pitchers. Hell, LSU fans think LSU was awful at the plate this year, when really it was the entire country.

You can blame me for '98. I was there. Something that is crazy about the championship game is that early in the game there was a straight steal of home. Who would have thought that someone would have risked so much for one run in a 21 to 14 game?

I remember listening to the final on the radio as I was driving back from Omaha and the reception wasn't so good in podunk Kansas (pardon redundancy).

"21-14? that can't be right."

Actually we were beaten on Thursday, and again on Friday. The Thursday game is the one where we should have eliminated USC. Blair was playing up for a bunt, the guy swings away, and what would have been an easy 5-3 third out, ended up bouncing over his head, and that was our season. But you're right we should have had 3 in a row.

I like home runs and hate the new bats, and I hate "small ball" but 21-14 is beer league softball. 3 - 2 can be tense and exciting, a game decided by 7 runs can be pretty boring

USC scored 21 in the title game.

LSU would have put up 30.

It makes me sick everytime I'm reminded of that 1998 CWS. LSU was on fire until the temperature dropped 60 degrees. Fundamentally, we were not a good team. Average fielding at best and couldn't bunt to save our lives. It was cold and overcast when we lost to USC on Thursday but the sun came out on Friday but still cold. The weather was better and the sun out on Saturday for the championship game between USC and Arizona State. I remember thinking if the weather had only been this good on Thursday, LSU would be in this game. Imagine if we win in 98 and have 4 titles in 5 years!

There were actually two steals of home that week. LSU also stole home once but it was on a 1st and 3rd double steal. So not quite as exciting.
