Thoughts on Gary Patterson and his coaching?

I know he's widely considered an elite coach coveted heavily by many negatigers on here. My impressions:
- Good coach, coaches toughness and resilience despite lesser talent. His team held up pretty well until late in the 4th when they finally gave in.
- Not as 'trick' oriented as I thought. Played it straight up. Maybe a bit of trickeration was warranted given the opponent
- Missed a trick by changing QBs too late.
- Very intense. I was worried for him with all the sweating.
- His players clearly like him and play with more intensity for him.
- Didn't like the pre-game comments about Hill especially given his QBs track record. Seemed a bit immature trying to get in Miles' head. Les didn't bite, proud of him for that.
Overall, if you flip coaches, I'd expect a similar result - LSU winning by a couple of scores. What coach Patterson does at TCU is what Miles did at Ok St which is to put big name opponents on the rails. In no way do I find him to be a huge upgrade over Miles, I'm sure many will disagree. I think Miles did very well and held his own in this game.

He's a good coach, he's done a lot at TCU, but has he always acted like a little bitch?
I've never paid too much attention to him for other big TCU games, but he cried before and after this one.

Considering Miles' winning % and the list of coaches he's beaten head to head, it's strange that LSU fans continue to expect Les to be outcoached.
It happens to every coach occasionally, but hasn't happened to Miles an inordinate amount of times.

Truth.
But many LSU fans are never going to accept the man, no matter how many times he wins or outcoaches an opposing coach.
To these people LSU wins with talent and coordinators and loses with Miles.
He is held to a different standard by some fans and by the media.

I thought he lacked a feel for the game, to be honest. There were a couple times late in the 3rd quarter, and in the 4th, where TCU had us on the ropes... and he punts on 4th and short.

lol saban and urban are two of the biggest egomaniacs in all of CFB and i think they're recruiting pretty well.

The media is always going to stir the pot. That's what they do. The Miles haters are generally the unsophisticated, uneducated, sidewalk variety of fans. You can certainly see that by their posts here, and their calls to radio shows. They're best ignored, or ridiculed.

His players looked very athletic but just smaller than LSU's. The biggest thing that I saw from his players was that they all had tons of heart and stood up to the Tigers like they expected to win that game.
Sure was a sweaty and intense guy but his tell was that he couldn't stfu.. ever. I first pinned him as a meth head but then I remembered that he is rich and pharmaceuticals rule the market today.... ADDERALL is his gameday thang baby!
A funny thought crossed my mind... after Blue looked ineffective and fumbled, I wondered if CGP might have gotten in Les' head which kept Hill off of the field. The thought did go away when I realized that the Les never planned to play Hill since he didn't need him to win that night anyway.
The end result is that I just don't see CGP going head to head with Saban like Les does in recruiting and on the field.
Les > CGP and most of the LSU fans who disagree most likely just don't like Les to begin with.

Gary and Les have coached in two very dissimilar contexts until recently, i.e., TCU in the Big12. So I don't think their careers invite comparisons.
That said, Patterson's work at TCU is very impressive. Should Les leave I would have no issues with him becoming our HC. TCU is usually among the nation's leaders in D (which I appreciate). Those who look at TCU's record last year and only know the surface story don't recognize what an incredible job of coaching he did.
I realize this is only anecdotal, but check out how well TCU played Utah in '08 and then compare that to how Utah kicked Bama/Saban's backside.
