I loved watching him play but unlike some of our latest backs I don't think he gets the respect he deserves because all his games weren't on tv like today's games are. I look at many tiger fans top 10 list and he is hardly mentioned. He is right up there in the all time rushing lists of SEC running backs also. His bowling ball style and juking was awesome. Just want to hear others that watched him also and

He was a legitimate star and very exciting to watch.

Always an underrated player, even in the NFL.

I always thought he looked like he was wearing skates when he ran - low to the ground and shifty.

Absolutely one of the best ever. Elusive, but he could run you over too. Some of the most powerful legs for an LSU running back ever.

One of those guys who didn't have the measurables some others had, not the biggest or fastest, but was a football player. Object lesson for people who get hung up on combine numbers.

I grew up 10 minutes from his hometown and played against Dalton once in high school. I believe he was a freshman or sophomore at the time. I joke that I'm still looking for my jock after the move he put on me on a toss sweep left. One of the shiftiest backs you will ever see. Didn't have blazing speed, but fast enough. For his size (he's probably 5'7"), he was incredibly durable, both at LSU and the Saints. And the most humble, quiet guy you'll ever meet.

Grew up with Dalton as the first LSU running back when I understood football. It was a great time, and he is one of the great Tigers in history for me, and a Saint to boot.

He wasn’t a speed burner but he could cut on a dime. One of my favorite backs of all time.

Dalton Hilliard

He worked a "job" at ANCO in Port Allen where Pops 19 was the dept. Head. I asked him to get Hilliard's autograph for me.

Took years for me to understand why Pops thought that was so funny.

I even remember the dance called “Do the Dalton” - Move to the left, Move to the right, Bye.

Was the 3rd highest rated freshman RB on the team when fall camp started behind Gary James and Karl Bernard. 100% one of the greatest at LSU and always underrated partially due to sharing SEC with Bo Jackson.

Watch 1985 Vanderbilt runs and kick off return and you’ll see the talent.

I always remember that defenders could never really get a direct hit on him bc of his ability to shift on a dime and that he always seemed to fall forward. One of my favorite LSU backs.

If you want to know how good he was just look up the interview with Ronnie Lott when he was with the 49ers. When asked who was the running back he hated to tackle the most, his answer was Dalton Hilliard.
I watched him play a charity basketball game at Chalmette high school. First off his thighs were like oak tree trunks. During warmups they players were dunking and it became his turn. I thought no way was he going to be able to dunk. He ran to the goal, jumped and had the top of his head no more than 4” from hitting the rim.

Ran into him at Sal and Sam's one night after a Saints game. He was out with a lady trying to have a nice dinner and was being harassed by a drunk fan for an autograph. Dalton was very gracious and signed a napkin or whatever for drunk dude.
I had seen Hilliard play at LSU as part of the Dalton/James gang. Very exciting to watch those guys work.
By the way, the night I saw him in the restaurant, I thought to myself, "Damn, that dude's thighs are as big around as my chest. No wonder he's so unstoppable "

The Dalton James Gang were during my first years of really following LSU Football. Great Back at LSU and with the Saints. A real shame that injuries slow down his career.

A lot like Emmitt Smith —great vision, great hands, tough, did not lose speed when he cut (biggest asset IMO). He did not have the break away speed of a Bo, Hershel, KF or LF , but was extremely effective, especially on passes out of the backfield. Rarely lost yards bc he could shift his shoulders/hips to avoid a squared up hit. IMO he was tougher than K Faulk, but they had similar build and styles. Dalton ran behind his pads better than KF and I think that’s why he was more effective. Dalton dropped off very little when playing against a great defense. KF exploited some bad/slow defense bc of his speed, so I think the career stats are not the best way to compare the two.

I saw him walking by the tiger cage in shorts and his thighs looked like tree trunks

Yup.
For me, football in general.

I was a wee lad, with Archie and George Rogers posters in my room back then. I was like...10 or 11.
