With players leaving strictly to get paid or paid more, surely there has to be some sort of legislation to cap how much money a team can spend on players. Otherwise this will be like MLB when the Yankees or Dodgers would outspend the competition for the game’s top stars. NIL has turned CFB into a professional sport.

It’s funny that you think this hasn’t always been the case

I wonder how much it would curtail spending. They been paying, it’s just put in the open now. The fact it’s “accepted” makes it easier to “hide” more if there was a cap.

Players have been getting $1k handshakes for years. No way to cap NIL.

TD promoting legislation. I've seen it all. Is that the Govt or NCAA?

Why would you want to kill a free, labor-friendly market in favor of a system that lets the ncaa, the sec, and the universities keep more of the profits?

Shake my head how so many people are quick to call for legislation to solve every thing they dislike but many of same people claim to be conservative. Free markets baby!
The pros dont have caps on endorsement deals either by the way. If NCAA (not gov't) is going to fix something it needs to be the portal. Make players sit unless grad transfer that would put brakes on alot of the musical chairs.

I don't like the way some schools purportedly use NIL, but either you're for college athletes getting paid or you're not. Sure, it's changing college football, but the athletes playing the smaller sports are making money too. I wouldn't be in favor of telling someone how they can or can't spend their money.

How are you going to cap something that doesn’t exist?

There is a cap. It's $0. The schools can't pay a player shite themselves. The problem is boosters are paying people under the umbrella of NIL. It needs to be legislated on who is paying players, and for what. No clue how you do that, and I don't think the NCAA knows either.

No, you just shutdown the collectives and make NIL actually about NIL

The NCAA can’t do anything about it unless someone is dumb enough to put it in a contract or something.

It’s almost like they had a blanket policy in place for that exact reason.

Posts like this illustrate just how little understanding people have of NIL, what it’s meant to be and how it works.

There can be no salary cap because it not salary. It’s essentially just like endorsement deals (at least on paper)

This. NIL combined with the portal made things so much worse.

A cap isn’t necessary but a contract that says “this contract is contingent on X and if you don’t meet the parameters or decide to transfer out our contract is hereby dissolved and in a transfer out situation may have to pay back some or all of the money you’ve taken so far” would go a long way if more people could get on board with it.

Again they can’t really do that. NIL deals are not related to the school or playing.

Yes I know that’s the reality, but from a legal standpoint it isn’t. Once NIL is tied to playing for a certain school (on paper) it’s no longer NIL and still against the rules.

The people helping putting up the money for big NILs can figure out a way to tie them to, albeit loosely, performance. A “character clause” for example. “Yeah you’re performing piss poor on the field or want to transfer out I can’t dock you for that, BUT this shite you’ve been posting on social media isn’t gonna fly.” Or a non-compete claus. But again- it would a lot of school donors getting on board.

I read of one that was tied to the locality of where the player played. Which makes sense as a Baton Rouge based business would want someone to play locally if they paid them NIL money. As long as there other schools in the required geography then it would not be school specific

Absolutely its necessary but even if we had one the same rule breaking under the table payments would occur… but at least it would be a violation again

So many people are quick to say no one can control them only to want to control others
