no. i've provided an analysis and commentary on customs themselves. i am well aware of the customs in this society and follow them, but i understand that they are customs alone. I realize that my doing them has more to do with conformity then it does with any greater meaning. i also recognize that those customs are ever changing and open to interpretations.

thusly, i'm never offended when people do not follow those same customs.

I wouldn't use that as an example because of what followed shortly after. You are right, but I'm just saying.

i always thought the nazis seemed unpatriotic. They really should have shown that they cared more about Germany.

I can respect that.

I remove my hat if I am wearing one.

I do it out of appreciation to the one Veteran that may be watching me remove my hat. A visible testament to my appreciation.

I also do it because it is the accepted form of saying thank you. I prefer to acknowledge the sacrifice of the Veterans. For every Vet that doesn't care about my hat...there might be one that does. I'll take my hat off for that one.

If there is another form that comes to pass (as customs change). I will observe that custom.

I do it for the same reasons. I like knowing the customs to wherever I visit. It ingratiates you to people and makes you a part of the community.

what i don't like are social enforcers of custom. especially for ones that are unclear, antequated, and perhaps no longer socially relevant.

Custom is malleable. Not cast in concrete.

There's no point in arguing. We won't win. Just let them do what they want. I'm just going to enjoy the rest of football season (and take my hat off during the national anthem like a true patriot) and won't pay any attention to the people that don't.

You're starting to get it kid. Everyone can enjoy the game like this, and you don't have to go through life being angry. If it does something for you, then by all means do it.

Also, what about the lackluster way most people "sing" the national anthem? Which shows more respect - a guy with his hat on, lustily belting out the song or the guy with his hat off just mouthing the words? There's any number of ways for people to express themselves on the issue. At the end of the day, it's personal.

love the 'can't shine a turd' comment.

Question is, why wouldn't you?

Nope. Still waiting for someone to prove this.

Here is my take on why it shows respect(Just an opinion about a custom I fell important enough to pertake in).

The taking off of one's hat for anything(national anthem, when going indoors, at the table....) comes from the same place as the military hand salute. In previous time periods all kinds of different style hats were worn for different purposes. Most of those purposes were to protect the head, face and/or ears from some hazard. These hats or head gear would also prevent someone from being able to see all features of the head. The military salute is thought to have come from knights. As they would pass each other they would take their hand and raise their visor to show the other their face as a sign of friendship/no harm. I believe people of the time thought the same of hats. The people would remove their hats as to show everyone who they were and that they meant no harm, because if you mean harm(stealing, rape...) you wouldn't want your face seen as to be known for doing such acts. So to show respect for the people they would take off their hats in certain instances to show themselves and that they mean no harm(no one would be scared or weary of them).
Flash forward..

The tradition evolves to present day. I wear my hat in alot of instances where someone from the 1800's probably wouldn't. I do take it off during the National Anthem as a sign of respect and to show thanks for all the men and women who have gone forth and sacrificed their lives for the betterment of this country and also so that I will never forget the price paid for my freedoms and so I will not take them lightly.
Therefore, I am passionate about this issue, because noone should ever forget the price paid for our freedoms and how hard they were to come by. I beleive freedoms don't disappear in the night but slowly over time. We have already started giving up some in the name of "Safety", but that is for another thread. I believe this custom has lasted so long and should go one because I don't want this country to lose the freedoms that sooo many paid dearly to get. JMHO!
