The numbers show that LSU’s hitting has been remarkably similar this year compared to last

The Tigers are hitting .292 this season, which is second-best in the SEC and almost identical to last year’s season-ending mark of .295. Similarly, the Tigers are averaging 6.55 runs per game this year, compared to 6.45 in 2016. By comparison, Mississippi State is third in the SEC with a batting average of .287 and is averaging 5.85 runs per game. Of course, stats never tell the whole story and there are a lot of factors in play here, including returning talent.

Still, I find these numbers interesting.

I think SEC numbers are a more even comparison considering how wildly OOC can change.

Last year we hit .305 in conference play with .390 OBP and .426 slugging. This year it's quite a bit beneath that.

Seems like the difference will be noticed more as the players he coached are no longer there.

We also had a completely new lineup last year. What's our base stealing numbers like compared to the last couple years? That's where I think Cannizaro made a huge difference.

The base-stealing numbers are quite a contrast between seasons as well.

Base stealing was a huge difference. LSU averaged 1.44 steals per game last year, this year they are at 1.09 while arguably having more speed in the lineup. Mississippi State averaged 0.81 steals per game last year and are averaging 1.25 this year.

Cannizzaro loves to run.

He does but Miss St only has 8 more stolen bases this season, 66 vs. LSU's 58, and MS has attempted 17 more stolen bases, 98 vs. LSU's 81. I'm not sure if the 8 additional stolen bases are worth the 9 additional outs given up.

If you are going to steal someone's content - word-for-word. The least you can do is give them a little credit.

I love how some people on this site take a look at numbers, staring them right in the face, and then pick and choose what they want to remove to help fit their argument.

- Oh..let's look at SEC stats only.

- Oh...the SEC stats still show LSU hitting really well? We need to take out the UGA game because it's making the stats seem higher than they actually were.

Let's remove LSU's top 5 hitting/scoring games and then you will get your shitty numbers you want to believe LSU has hitting.

Notice how the pitching is pretty rarely complained about here? Now look at the pitching stats and see where we rank, and you will find your answers.

Not sure about MSU, but LSU has 92 doubles on the season and 48 HRs.

The biggest problem with this comparison is that Cannizaro was given a completely new lineup to coach last year, and Gibbs was given a team of almost exclusively all veterans who had hit well last year. I don't see the overall improvement in the lineup you would expect after another full season of seeing SEC pitching.

Well, with this being the case, isn't it unfair to judge Gibbs either way by this years team?

Which players do we have that haven't been coached by AC, that have played a lot??

Watson - has been a nice surprise with his bat.
Smith - solid bat all year
Slaughter - started off good, but slumped
Coomes - been hitting pretty well all season
Wooley - looked good with limited at bats

Clutch hitting is where LSU struggled some this year. Getting hits with runners on base is key.
They had a stretch of games where they were leaving way too many runners on base - that's baseball.

LSU started 3 true freshmen for much of the season and still starts 2 true freshmen, Smith and Watson, and one new JC transfer, Coomes. That means 1/3 of the starting batting order is new to LSU.

So I don't agree that the team is "almost exclusively all veterans."

This is the case for everybody and it happens to ALL teams. Ask Auburn...

There have been cases where we have come up with clutch at bats in nearly every situation. It works both ways.

I know the numbers have improved but at one point, LSU was hitting 0.211 w/ 2 outs and RISP in SEC play. I want to say that was halfway through the SEC. But again, even though I don't have the numbers in front of me, we've definitely improved in that area. How could you not going 8-1 the last 3 weeks?
