That's for the Tiger Girls at the basketball games.

Just put the Tiger Girls in the GG uniforms and you have a whole new swagga to TGBFTL.

Much invalid (not to mention asinine) assumption going on in this post.

I love the traditions. But the logo, the tunes the band plays, the football uniforms, the stadium, etc., etc. have all been brought into the 21st century without sacrificing tradition. TGBFT (including the Golden Girls/Purple People) has simply gotten stale. A little updating doesn't mean trashing tradition. But just doing it exactly the same as last year (and last century) isn't tradition--it's laziness.

I didn't take your posts as being over the top (I did see the other guys response). I was just enjoying our casual conversation about the band and dance team. Good point about Ohio St and A&M. Then again, I don't think that Ohio St could find 14-15 attractive girls that could add to their band. But I do like the "freshness" of their halftime entertainment. Actually, I have never watched the Ohio St band's halftime routine, but I see the youtube links all the time, and am aware of the Michael Jackson routine, or the Nintendo program.

Just saying that I find this a marvelous scene.

I was hoping they would play Neck after Hilliard/Diarse td's.

The halftime show was awful. Time to go after the former band director of tOSU.

When they played "All of the Lights" before the game, it was freaking awesome. When it comes to pure sound power, TGBFTL is probably tops in the SEC. The only other band who may match them is Auburn. I agree that some of the halftime shows are getting stale (a Latin show every year that gets performed more than once...usually at a bowl game), but no other band is as good as ours at interracting with the crowd and getting them fired up.

I can always tell when you have bunch of people talking back and forth who have no idea what goes on in band and music programs. I can guarantee you that the three bands you mentioned, OSU, A&M, and Michigan are anything but fresh. They are just as mired in tradition as TGBFTL is. I know a couple of guys who graduated from UM and OSU, and while they loved the tradition, they complained about how stale things were.

And are you fricking kidding me? A&M? That band is literally stuck in 1940, rope drums, follow drills, and the same military music over and over, and all. Dude. I'm not saying it isn't striking. It is, because NO ONE does it anymore but them. Well, maybe Army and Navy, but that's it. But it sure as hell isn't fresh. It's a throwback.

If you really don't like what the band is doing, then call or email the band office and tell them. I can tell you from my time in TGBFTL that they hear a lot of complaints ANYTIME they deviate from tradition in the slightest. For example, the drumline added a new drum cadence for the march to and from the stadium in 96-97, and it took 4-5 weeks for the complaints to die down and people to get used to it. We thought that was insane, because it sounded good and was more "modern" and up to date. But that's LSU, or at least a significant chunk of the fanbase. And that is what the band department hears the most (at least that has been the case)- more of the same. If you don't agree with that and want to see something different (specific examples would be good), let them know about it.

I have never played in a band, but I do enjoy the marching bands, especially the drums. What do you mean by a new cadence? I'm guessing you are talking about the "extended version" of the cadence. I know that the first part of it has been played as far back as I can remember, which is the 80s. By the way, I would not have complained about the "new part". I like the extended version.

I barely could hear the band because it was so loud when we were rallying and they were below me. But I could tell they were playing because the crowd below me was doing the cheers with them. No fault of the band, but a compliment on how loud the fans were.

Sitting behind the band will make it hard to hear them. That's why a few years ago they moved the band to horseshoe in the North endzone. The fans in the West upper couldn't hear them prior to that because they were behind the band. Now the band is somewhat facing everyone.

Wouldn't know about that. I sat in third level in same endzone and could barely make out a note. Even when they were on the field playing it was hard to hear them...

Was this the one Ian wrote? I got in 97-98, and there was a 3rd sequence that was new. I enjoyed it.

We were waiting for neck to start up after one of the TDs towards the end of the game but it seemed like other things were going on or whatever. It just never happened. Oh well....nothing like pre-game that's for sure.

Yep. "The Blue Building" was the name of the cadence, and Ian Smith wrote it. I graduated after 96-97, and that was the year we rolled it out. However, I don't think it is still in the rotation. I heard it got dropped a couple of years later.

For the other guy asking, the other cadences had been around for a while even when I was there. I don't think anyone knows when Blue Raiders was written or the drumline started using it, but it had been around at least since the mid 80s. It probably goes back further than that. Blue Balls (or Blue Bells, as it is officially recognized by the band department) was added somewhere between 88-90. I think there may still be a third cadence, but I don't believe it is Blue Building anymore. Too bad, because it was a lot of fun to play.

One of the drum captains wrote a 3rd cadence to go with the other two that we started using in 1996. So I guess that would make it the extended-extended version.

I just found it crazy at the time that anyone cared. Most fanbases could give less of a damn about the entire band, much less the drumline cadence. That's one of the things that really stood out to me as a member of TGBFTL, and something I have always appreciated. It is a different world for most other band programs. Out of the SEC, there is a huge drop off in fan interest and respect beyond LSU and Tennessee. Well, I guess you have to throw the damn Aggies and their backward asses in there too. I hope this never changes.
