im in the middle on this. it definately makes a point and sticks a knife in GT, but also it makes us look classless. you can look at two ways. 1. were competitors or 2. were assholes

Miles was giving Paul Johnson a FU with that fake punt for the way Johnson handled himself in pre-bowl interviews.

From an article from our Peach Bowl win over Miami 4 years ago:

quote:

LSU attempted a fake field goal while leading 34-3 late in the third quarter and failed on a fake punt with a 40-3 lead. Miles said he called for the fake field goal, but that his players called for the fake punt.

``They can call whatever play they want to,'' Coker said. ``It is our job to stop it.''

You completely missed the point of the post. Not surprising

Arrogant little sore loser, too, aren't you?

Payback's a bitch, isn't it? What with all those GT folks thinking they were forced into going slumming in the Chickin Lickin bowl by having to play an unworthy opponent in the lowly ranked LSU Tigers. Perhaps next time GT goes bowling the malcontents should do their bitching about which team they play after the game ... assuming GT wins the next bowl game, of course.

There was a lot more going on during that game than meets the eye, for sure ... and anyone who has observed Les Miles and his coaching style during his tenure at LSU to this point knows he's anything but classless, so your breathless protestations to the contrary are rather useless. Nor is he the idiot many try to make him out to be. Whatever reason Miles and GC had for pulling off a brilliant fake punt (you do still have 4 legitimate downs to gain the requisite first down in CFB, do you not?), it had to be a good one.

And FTR, nope, I've never once in all my years as an alum and fan of LSU, whined, bitched, pissed or moaned during or after an opposing team's coach poured it on and allowed his team, both offense and defense, to continue to play the entire 4 quarters.

This is very much like political class warfare.

Ga Tech tried a Fake punt and failed. This bothered no one because they were losing. We are winning at the time and can't call that play? What the F?

1- We weren't trying to score just running out the clock. Not like we heaved a 50 yard bomb or went for 2 on a TD.

2- Had anyone done the same to us, I would not have been pissed.

3- Les Miles is known for doing this stuff (being a gambler) It was not out of character.

4- Ga Tech needs to worry about 1000 things before they get to the fake punt issue.

5- That is all.

The on-side kick was brilliant. The fake punt was a waste of a great play that might have served the team well in the future. It's totally out there, now.

I thought we ran that play last year.

I don't want an LSU coach that worries more about being "classy" than dominating the team across the line of scrimmage. The other team gets a chance to stop us on every play. If they don't, too bad for them.

+1
:kige:

It's Miles' job to put his team in the best position to win each game. If he felt this would help the team by completely taking them by surprise and demoralizing them, so be it. I hate people that see something wrong with playing to win on every play. It's their job to score and the other team's job to stop us, right?

fake punt was weak..if it happened to you, you would be bitching.
you don't run a fake punt up 30, that's a JV move

Pete Carroll???

The guy went an entire half not passing the ball once.

He always pulls his starters, sometimes as early as the 3rd quarter.

Try to take an unbiased approach, it helps.

To restate for you, I'd tell the guys to push the edge of the envelope, hit the QB every play, and don't worry about the penalty if it comes. Nothing dirty, just make sure he's on his butt every time you can get him there.

If your hitting a guy when he doesn't have the ball and you're getting a penalty for it, THAT IS DIRTY!!!

No bitch, your team was weak this year, as usual....easy for you to say what you'd do up 30, seeing as your team never has that option!

it was more about clock management/ball control then some big "hit you when you're down" call. When you are close to a win, you want to do everything possible to make absolutely sure you stay on top till the time runs out.

For some reason I wasn't upset about the play at the time. I thought it was about ball control and was a brilliantly designed play, well executed at a time when it totally caught the opposition off guard. GT should know better than to just assume the other team is going to simply give them the ball back on a 4th down play.

quote:

CLASSLESS. You're winning by 30+ points and have the game in your pocket. It was unnecessary, and pointless. That's something Pete Carroll would do.

I do remember feeling this way about Carroll. I specially remember about 3 or 4 years ago USC was putting a beat down on Notre Dame and Carroll did a fake punt up by about 3 touch downs or more. I thought it was classless then and was very critical for kicking Notre Dame when they were down. So if I step back and look at it objectively I'd have to say it was not very sporting of Miles to not simply kick the ball to GT and let them try to score.

But was it classless? No. GT proved this year they were more than capable of scoring points in bunches. Miles stole several possessions from GT last night and I thought it was brilliant coaching.

The way I see it, a big score over a ranked opponent was the only shot we had to make it into the final rankings... I know the fake punt didn't lead to a score, but why not go for it?
