Don't forget the millions we would owe Aranda ($4 million left on contract) and Canada ($3 million left on contract.)
Keep them. Interim head coach and let Canada develop a QB.

Hate to say it but after 2 years of O and 2 bad seasons, LSU hires Frank Wilson? We will need to hire a big name for fans and recruiting sake to re-energize.
Frank Wilson would be a safe hire.. and that's probably what we need. If you're down by 2 going into the bottom of the 7th you don't need a homerun. Just play solid ball.

contracts would more than likely void when they take new jobs. Or we'd have to pay the difference maybe. I forget how that works.
They should have just hired Aranda as HC. Cant really afford to do that now though.

Frank Wilson is an O disciple. If he goes on and has success as a HC I would love to have him here one day but the next hire can't have any connection to the current regime whatsoever.

Time to come up with an ncaa violation

That's a bit extreme. Frank Wilson is on a tear right now at UTSA, and he could be a grand slam hire. there won't be a next time because another P5 program is going to take a shot with him soon

Yes. The Orgeron contract breaks down like this:
$500k a year from LSU
$500k a year from TAF
$2.5 mil a year from Radio and TV
The first two combine for $1 million a year. It gets paid to O direct. The TV money goes to O's LLC for tax purposes.
His buyout numbers are listed in terms of a maximum total. That $12 million figure everyone talks about, is the most he can be paid between Jan 1, 2017 and the end of the contract, if he gets fired before December 31, 2017. It goes down every time he gets a monthly check. So if he's fired at exactly the one year mark, he had gotten paid $3.5 million. So his "buyout" would be $8.5 million ($8.5 plus $3.5 = $12).
The contract literally demonstrates this using a November 30, 2018 firing. His max buyout amount is $8.5 million as of January 1, 2018. If fired on Nov 30 he'd have been paid 11 months of $291,666.67 per month, which is a hair over $3.2 million to coach the 2018 season. If fired on November 30, 2018 he is owed the $8.5 million figure, less the $3,208,333.33 he was paid. That gets you $5,291,666.67 as a buyout.
O's buyout is NOT paid like Miles. If and when O is fired, he is owed a flat $2 million within 60 days. Whatever remains after that $2 million is paid can be paid monthly, but can only be stretched by the remaining years on the contract. NOT twice the number of months like Miles.
So let's call O's buyout $5.3 million. He gets fired November 30, 2018. He has to be paid $2 million on or before January 30, 2019. One that happens, he's owed an additional $3.3 million over 35 months (assuming he got his lump on Jan 30 '19). That's a hair under $95,000 per month.

right, so there really is no harm in firing him this year as opposed to next year, when essentially he will be paid the same amount?

Consider it a $12 million investment total.

You don't think Ole Miss is going to go after him? Frank is not going to turn down life changing money in hopes of coming to LSU

That's what i thought. Why does the first 4 pages of this thread act like we would get some kind of deal based on the OP's post?

Well I think the "harm", if you want to call it that, is having to pay O AND Miles AND whatever new guy you hire. Not to mention Alleva since you have to believe he's gone before O.
You need someone like Bernhard to come in and stroke a big check in order to make that feasible.

There are other issues to consider like:
- Has Miles been paid a lump sum to go away, or is he still getting monthly checks?
- Did TAF buy an annuity to fund the monthly checks so that it's a sunk cost anyway?
- The assistants' salaries and offsets (I haven't looked at those contracts yet)
But just looking at O's contract, Waiting another year saves you $1 million. Plus there is the obvious about optics, pulling the trigger too fast, etc. Remember, we expect to replace Orgeron with an absolute home run hire. Can you do that if you canned a guy after one year, with four years left on his deal?
Also, as noted above the buyout is about $5.3 million if Orgeron gets fired 11/30/18. That's literally in the contract in black and white. But come January 1, 2019? The baseline amount changes to $6 million.
That's right - cheaper to fire Orgeron on Thanksgiving 2018 than New Year's Day 2019. And you save over $3 million ($8.5 million versus $5.3 million) by improving your optics, making sure the new AD is in office and has plenty of time to conduct a thorough search, and firing Orgeron next Thanksgiving.

actually, I think we're in the Archer phase. Promoted an assistant who is just a horrible head man.
I think the right coach takes us back to something above the Dinardo era quickly.
