When the field goal was made, but the kicker was run into, LSU choose to take the first down, instead of the points. That was the difference in the game. A conservative coach might have choose to take the field goal and kick off

Also Ed Cunningham said it was a poor call, but I disagree...

Worst that happens is you fail to get in the end zone and kick another fieldgoal

Right. OP is saying if we had settled for that field goal as Les arguably would have been inclined to do in the past, than its 20-20 in the final minutes of the fourth and State is driving for the win. Best case we go into overtime and who knows how that would have ended.

Uh, no. Turnover is worse thing that can happen. That being said.....I take the penalty all day everyday at that point in the game.

Moore redeemed himself. Maybe he made the right decision, who knows, but he made up for it there. Tremendous play.

The old guy sitting behind me lost his mind when we took the penalty. Complete meltdown style. I just turned around and smiled when we scored the TD. He didn't have many opinions the remainder of the game.

No one turns down a fresh set of downs in the red zone. Especially when you have JD Moore and LF7.

It would be hard to find a coach in any level that would take the points when they are that close to end zone. Stupid

It was a weak call but I'll take it. The pass interference they got later on called for them gave them a chance to even things up.

I just wonder how many of the usual "I hate Miles" suspects were screaming about how stupid Miles is when he took the points off the board.

I can practically see them: screaming at the top of their lungs, neck veins bulging, face all red, fists clenched, spittle running down the corners of their mouths.

No coach in all of history would have settled for 3 points when they give you a first down.

No, the worst is that you miss the next FG attempt or turn the ball over before you get a chance to kick it and walk away with no points. Nevertheless, you always take a first down in that situation and take your chances on getting a touchdown. We did the right thing and it paid off.

I think I might have seen it maybe once or twice, yet every time that situation comes up, some idiot announcer cites the supposed old axiom that you never take points off the board. It's stupid, and I don't know where it even came from, but some idiot always says it. Jerry Stovall was criticized for doing the same thing in the Orange Bowl against Nebraska because we had to settle for another FG attempt after the penalty gave us a first down and we missed the second one. We lost the game by 1 point, so those 3 would have been enough to win. But, the criticism is stupid and Stovall did the right thing. He just got unlucky with the miss on the second FG attempt.

Is it even an argument to take the first down and continue the drive, kick another FG if needed at the end of the drive?

It shouldn't be, but for some reason with some people it is.
