Wickes will be difficult to replace. Good riddance for me as far as LM is concerned. I was part of the fiasco on the Ole Miss trip in '89. Her dishonesty, though largely forgotten, adversely affected some good kids.

FYI - Drum majors deal with none of that, so he would be of no help.

Point missed, he wouldn't be DM. The directors picked a new one in April. Rob would basically be serving the same role as a grad arse.

And as far as all the talk about the organization being different goes: :beatdeadhorse:

Exactly - you missed it. The post I was replying to said he had experience in those things...

Rob was just a drum major. he has been around 6 years and is just trying to get deeper into the band administration. It's time for him to get on with life

That's along the line of what grad assts. do, at least to my understanding. And even if they don't, how hard is it?

He's offering his time to help an organization he cares deeply about and like it or not, we need someone like Rob to help keep things in some kind of order. He knows the organization, and he's not getting paid, so I see no problem with it.

Think about this...

Dude offers his services for free.

BOOM - He's on. There's no reason for it to go any further.

Maybe they don't want him around any more, so they tell him his VOLUNTEER HELP was not approved...?

I've heard stuff much farther fetched...

I didn't want to say it, but I really think this is what went down.

I don't get it. If he's offering to do some behind the scenes stuff in the office or whatever I don't see the big deal. Its not like he's asking to be back in the band... he's not asking to be paid. I mean, the staff is short as it is obviously...

i heard that he was pretty vocal during the search process for the new director of bands. possibly a personal grudge from the administration?

His opinion doesn't really count...

ETA: because for any student to suggest they know better than a committee consisting of some of the most accomplished faculty members in the country is pretty damn arrogant.

Myth.

Rob Dowie is/was/has been a very polarizing figure within the LSU bands and the LSU School of Music. The band is not going to fail and crumble just because Rob Dowie woudn't be involved in Tiger Band next year.

I know many LSU alums who, time not an issue, would love to volunteer their 'expert' musical services to Tiger Band. Though Mr. Dowie I'm sure has the best intentions, it's probably best to just let LSU SOM faculty, staff, and current 'student leaders' do their thing. As a poster has already mentioned in this thread - Tiger Band will be just fine.

...and there has been so much misinformation in these Tiger Band threads; it's been significantly laughable.

the Tiger Band staff isn't short right now when its down the de facto head director? I just mean if he's going to be around he can probably help with general office stuff and coordinating things so its one less thing on Roy's plate in such a hectic time. Roy and the grad asses are going to need to dedicate even more time than usual to on the field issues.

Aren't there people in the office that already do this sort of thing? Non-directors?

Besides that, this petition makes no sense to me. Why does there need to be a petition to allow someone to volunteer their time for free? Obviously, the SoM doesn't want him around or they would just let him hang around some more.

What SOM faculty have experience with marching band? In my experience, I've found that SOM Concert/Symphonic/Wind/Performance musician types are totally clueless in marching band matters.

Ya want the womens softball coach to go be the offensive coordinator of the football team?

SOM faculty are exactly the reason LM left LSU by degrading Tiger Band down a few notches in putting the "Associate Director of Bands" title on the head TB Director, instead of the "Director of Bands" title. That's probably the reason they're having trouble getting somebody to take the job. Who wants to be the director of Tiger Band if they're only going to be the "Associate" Director of Bands?

Are any of the new grad assistants from LSU or are they coming in blind from another school?

RK should very well know if he's going to need help or not, on or off the field, and should be the one to choose whomever that help is. If he wants RD, or anybody else for that matter to help out, that should be HIS call.......
