If he is off the team for an entire year, why can he then go to any FCS school but not LSU? Makes no sense.

damn it.

That's really not true though. It's just not.

i still don't understand why TM never got multiple game suspension or 1 year..
all he ever got was a 1 game..
all he ever got was a 1 game..

I'm perplexed. If HB is "permanently ineligible" exclusively as a result of a written LSU policy, then there must be some mechanism by which LSU can offer a special exemption to that policy which allows reinstatement. That is, so long as no external authority like the NCAA is enforcing the ban, LSU should be able to grant dispensations from its own rules. There must be a process for doing so.

My guess is he was on some kind of a super secret probation (that he and the coaching staff knew about), which would explain why he was off-limits to the media for the last few months.

Yep. Why is a year long suspension basically not enough of a punishment? Seems stout to me.

This whole thing is far from over..

The ESPN story also said "the possibility of reinstatement would have to be approved at many levels, including university administration as well as coach Les Miles, and is being discussed."
LSU associate athletic director Herb Vincent, who is also LSU's associate vice-chancellor, had not heard of such discussions going on as of late Monday afternoon. "I'm not aware of any," he said. But Vincent was vague when asked if Mathieu did have some chance of returning to the LSU football team in 2013. "We're not speculating on that today," he said. Mathieu has been described as very upset in recent days as he has tried find a lower division school to which to transfer.
He visited McNeese State in Lake Charles on Friday. Officials at Jackson State in Jackson, Miss., said Monday Mathieu is planning a visit there. "I worry about him being emotional at this time," Miles said.

Were you responding to me or the initial post?
If the latter, what, exactly, is "bullshite"? The notion that LSU is the ultimate and final arbiter of its own rules? Again, so long as the rules aren't being enforced by the NCAA in some oblique manner, I don't see why LSU wouldn't be able to offer a dispensation from the regulations that it drafted and controls, assuming that such dispensation went through the proper LSU appeals channels and was ratified by the proper LSU authorities?

This isn't over. I think miles lets him back after sitting out a year.
Everyone wins.
Everyone wins.

I believe the key to all of this is that there is an appeal process after the 3rd offense. The question is did TM have a fair opportunity under his stressful emotional state to think clearly before denying his appeal? Maybe a loop hole when analyzing the school policy..

I had always understood the policy to be:
1 failed test - counseling but no suspension
2 failed teasts - suspended for one game
3 failed tests - 1 year suspension
I seem to remember that being the official LSU policy, and Miles said it was "permanent" because he never suspected that Mathieu would elect to sit out a year and apply for reinstatement, which I suppose would be required by the university.
So....if I'm correct, he could possibly come back if the university approved it after a year. And why wouldn't they? Sitting out a year, paying your own way, getting your life straight, should be encouraged by the school. It shows that he's facing his responsibilities and growing up.
Maybe I'm wrong about the policy. But if I'm right, there would seem to be no reason for the university to make a final decision that he can't play. They should let him sit out, review his actions, then approve/disaprove when he applies. But it seems to me they would encourage such action.

Maybe there was a third that he did appeal, then got caught again?

Muscona quoted Glenn Guilbeau who allegedly is quoting the compliance office, which is extremely suspicious. They haven't said a word to anyone else, but they're talking to a guy in Shreveport?
Also, as MM pointed out, a third failure is a year long suspension, set in stone, yet TM was at media day and practicing less than a week ago. It takes a fourth test to be permanently ineligible and there just isn't time for that to have happened.

I agree with this.

Still doesn't make sense. If he got caught a 3rd time his 1 year suspension should take immediate affect.. not oh lets bust him a 4th time and just kick him off.
To me it sounds more like this was his 3rd time and they didn't expect him to be willing to sit out a year and in his best interest to move on.
