What are you talking about? He was a better hitter last season. He has never been a great fielder. His fielding last season was worse than the year before.

I might be wrong but I don’t think Thompson will be on this team when it’s all said and done. I expect him to hit the portal. For sure if we pick up a few more in the portal. Wilson being one.

I'm complete opposite. If you listen to Jay talk about Thompson, you can tell that Jay wants him to very much be a part of this team and sees great potential in him.

Honestly, his offensive numbers from this season were fine, and if you look at his back end numbers, they were way better, which showed Jay's impact on his development. If he improves on them any it will be awesome.

Defense is where he struggles; but the tools are there for him to be good in the field. Maybe a position change away from SS will be what he needs.

The deadline to hit the portal and be eligibly to play next season was July 1st. His name would have shown up in the portal by now if he would have wanted to transfer. If he would go in the transfer portal he would have to have a waiver cleared to be able to play next season. Not sure what type of waivers are approved but I would think it would have to be such thing as a coaching change.

Beside all of that, Jay really likes Thompson and what he is capable of doing. He is also known as a leader among the locker room. I don't think he will be going anywhere.

So you don't think focusing on something that doesn't come natural to you can have an affect on other parts of your game?

If you don't think that completely changing your approach to half of the the game can have an affect on the other part of your game then ok I'm wrong.

He had an OPS of .716 and 57 Ks in 244 plate appearances (23.4% K rate) in 2021 under Paul. He had an OPS of .827 and 44 Ks in 267 plate appearances (16.5% K rate) this year. Only Morgan and Berry had lower K rates than Thompson did. He drew 20 walks in those plate appearances in 2021 and 35 walks this year. He had 20 XBHs this year compared to 13 last year. What exactly do you think was better about his approach at the plate his freshman year compared to this past season?

He also seemed to work all fields a little better in 2022 vs mostly pull in 2021.

I don't have numbers to back it up, but that's what it seemed like.

So adjusting my swing will affect my ability to field a groundball? I can’t figure out if this is a troll or you really believe this.

I like what G. Edwards and G. Taylor are doing. Especially like to see Taylor cutting down on the free-passes. This guy can be a big part of the rotation/bullpen next season. He has good stuff. He needs to finely tune his control and location.

Josh Stevenson .288 AVG, 59 AB, 17 H, 7 2B, 10 RBI, 16 R, 16 BB, 19 SO, 5 SB

Love to see that! Expecting him to really step up his game in 2023.

What about that do you love, exactly? The thing that most stands out to me is the 19 SO in 59 ABs. (Of course it’s 75 PAs because of his 16 walks, which looks like it continues to be maybe the best part of his game—seeing a lot of pitches and giving you competitive at bats).

I think a lot of people have him penciled in as a starting corner OF next season, expecting him to take a similar step to his brother’s. But I think there’s a bias there that prevented them for seeing him for who he actually is. If his name were Josh Brown, I don’t think there’d be nearly the same level of excitement. He’s not nearly the same level of athlete as his brother and is not in the same universe as a defender. And he has way too much swing and miss at the plate as well. Now, he’s bigger than his brother and will probably grow into his power and hit some home runs. You can kinda see that with his 7 doubles. And his BA is certainly encouraging—he probably just needed more consistent ABs. But until those balls start going over the fence, he’s gonna have to cut down on his strikeouts. And again, he’s not a good enough defensive OFer to make up for it.

I think he’s gonna wind up developing into a very good player, but with the guys we’ve got coming back and coming in, I think it might be his 3rd year before he becomes an everyday starter.

That is a 25%K rate which is improvement over his fall/spring scrimmage K rate of 32% and his 22 season K rate of 36%. So that is actually a very encouraging stat.

As far as his defense I think you and quite a few other posters give him a bad reputation defensively because of the regional. I can recall quite a few nice plays he made chasing down a ball toward the line that few people would have gotten to. I think he just wasn't used to judging those liners in LF being he played CF his whole life. He also seemed scared to take a chance at making a play and the ball getting past him.

All that said I agree with what you said about him being a starter next season. He will definitely be in the mix and get some playing time, but I think they have other options that will likely have him fall back as far as getting a starting spot everyday come SEC play.

You could argue though how he closed the season this year is the best fielding he's had since he got here. He had like 1 error his last 11 games, 2 his last 16 games. That's really good for a college SS.

Unfortunately he racked up like 16 errors his first 40 something games this season.

Thompson has a place here, regardless of if we take even another player in the INF in the portal or not. He saw some real improvement this season and could have a very big junior season. Maybe he wont play SS, or even 2B, but my money is still on him being a starter.

I’m not sure anyone has him pencilled in for a starting spot in the OF? I haven’t seen that at least. He’s going to be a very solid contributor though. He also walks as much as he strikes out which is fine by me.

I agree that it may be year three for him that he breaks through. But Stevenson would be at the top of my "bad attrition" list. Hope he keeps fighting and taking coaching.

Ruddell quit his summer team like 2 weeks in. He and Frey were playing in Kansas. Frey still up there.

Speaking of Stevenson and his defense. Walks it off with a double after this catch. Nice day for him.
