Steele called the most vanilla defense I've seen in awhile

Last night the defense stayed in nickel 90% of the time with no variations and rarely threatening blitz. The only times there was a blitz it was off the corner with the nickelback like what we saw in the spring game.

I think Steele is a big believer in deception and confusion so keeping his best schemes and plays in his pocket against scrub teams should be expected. He's the kind of guy that would rather have his team play in a subpar manner than put his schemes on film for SEC coaches to study.

Expect the same thing next week with some added blitzes but don't hold your breath for any odd/exotic looks.

I agree, the key to improving your defense is perfecting your base set which they stayed in the whole night. EMU adjusted after the first half. I'm pretty sure he's holding back for conference play.

You know I use to believe that miles was that way. Then when we got to the big games it was more of the same. That's why I have to be drunk to watch an LSU game.

The defense is young and will get better...barring injury...throughout the year.

Perhaps our best overall defensive back in Jalen Mills, should be back for the Florida game.

By the time we play the final four, we should be very good on defense...very good.

Considering what he saw against Miss State and Auburn, there's definitely a lot in that playbook that we aren't seeing. I think Beckwith was used at DE once last night and that's the most exotic thing there was.

Everything was Cover 2 with man underneath and the defensive line wasn't stunting much it seemed. Most blitzes came on 3rd down.
