Why in the world did we not stack the box on every play? It looked like most of the time we rushed 4, had LB's in normal spots and played zone coverage. Newton eats that alive and he did against LSU yesterday. LSU's game plan on offense was horrible, as usual, but the defensive game plan was not very good. Both got LSU beat.

Chavis said "we are not changing"

"We will run our defense"

We did not attack that offense... Instead we waiting to see where the ball was going, who took the handoff, etc. Just seemed like our D was in reactve mode, playing off the back foot.

I remember watching Bama last year attack Tebow, push the issue, make them uncomfortable. I did not like our gameplan on D, which is surprising b/c Chavis had some success against the style of O

Theoretical is right. What did Newton throw for like 80? We just let Auburn play into their strength and they did so by the tune of 400 plus yards rushing. That wasn't very smart.

Kige

We waited for the play to develop. Constantly gave up the LOS (Nevis ineffective) and were duped pretty good with Cam's play fakes. Turned out the had other playmakers, go figure. Skinny was they whipped us on the line, and our second and third level personnel could not adjust in time. The shite going down late in the 4th just equated to a gassed D team. The 70 yarder was a great indicator of that.

I think we gave other teams the blue print of how to not play against Auburn. Guarantee you saban will be on attack mode.

One of the most horrendous game plans chavis has put together. And he refused to make any adjustments.

Simply pathetic!

I really didn't understand what we were doing. I would have thought that we stack the box and play man on the back. I think we could have contained Newton much better.

Then our offense was just a disaster. I just give up all hope of turning that around.

The next SEC games are not going to be pretty for LSU. I think we are looking at a 9-3 season at best.

LSU bought into the "Stay at home and don't get up field" myth that has failed so many times against the spread option. I think the best way to defense that is to try and blow up every play and force the QB to scramble.

However, many have bought into the "myth" that to defend the spread you should stay at home, stay in your lanes, keep the play in front of you, and concede the 3 yd carry and not give up the big play. The problem with that is that you almost never hold them to 3 yds and you still give up the big play.

It just appears that neither side of the ball game plans to either exploit the other team's weakness, or try to effectively stop their strength. For some unknown reason, LSU appears to have adopted the mentality that we are simply going to do what we want, and we don't give a rat's azz who we are playing. Works when you simply have a team filled of better athletes. Recipe for failure when the athleticism equals out between the two teams.

That will only make AU find different areas to block.

At least they would have to think on the fly. Yesterday all they had to do was engage our D players and let Cam pick his lane. Our D line basically just stood up and tried to hold their ground and were never really attacking.

Worst defensive game plan since chavis has been at LSU. It looked like he had no clue what to do, so he played a based 4-3 and never made any adjustments.

The worst thing I saw was that Auburn's gameplan was obviously built around getting a body on the MLB to allow Newton room at the 2nd level. We never adjusted the DL to take that away and they had a body on Kelvin Shepperd all day.

Pitiful coaching job.

I too was shocked at the lack of aggression displayed by the defense. I assumed they would put 8 or 9 in the box and leave the corners on an island like MSU did. Didn't happen though and it's very puzzling. The loss of Sam Montgomery and Blackwell were also huge yesterday.

I was really surprised we played so vanilla on defense. It must be contagious...

No changes at the line when they would audible. I really was surprised at this more than anything. I expected our offense and playcalling to look little league but had come to give Chavis some repsect this year... oh well..

I heard a rather lengthy interview with Chavis this week in which he laid out what sounded like a pretty solid defensive game plan. From what I can tell, this is the defensive game plan that LSU ran during the game. However, it is clear that the plan was not working. While LSU was holding Auburn to a limited number of scores, they were essentially running all over the field against us.

I was surprised that there was not a major defensive adjustment over the course of the game. LSU remained in that same general defense throughout, and Newton run his plays and just waited for us to react. I agree with some of the posters here that the game plan didn't appear to work as expected and that some adjustments were need.

I do not, however, think that this makes Chavis a terrible coach, as some have intimated. Rather, just like some players have a bad game, I think that Chavis didn't have his best game against Auburn. I don't think that there is anything fundamentally wrong with our D, and I think the Chavis has done a phenomenal job at improving our D this year. I give Chavis credit for LSU having 7 wins this year--he certainly deserves more of the credit than Crowton and probably Miles.
