I get on Hawthorne a good bit on this site (some just to stir the pot), but to be honest, I can totally understand the Jack Hunt mistake. Hawthorne wants the Tigers to win just like the rest of us. That had to be miserable sitting in the pressbox calling what was about to be a humiliating loss. You can't blame for not being 100% into that call at the start of the play. Listen to his voice as the play starts, he's so disheartened. And then the miracle happens and I'm sure that Hawthorne wasn't the only one immediately shocked. It's just that we don't have audio of all of our thoughts when Dash Right 93 Berlin happened.

I know it's because of the significance of the play, but it's such an awesome name.

for some reason I seem to remember an article from the time stating that they re-recorded it. However I could not find that on a search but I did find this...
quote:

LSU radio play-by-play man Jim Hawthorne infamously screamed, "Caught! Caught! Touchdown! I do not believe it! That's Jack Hunt." Hunt, a former wide receiver turned safety, wore No. 8. LSU later deleted Hawthorne's mistake from the archived recording. Hawthorne, moments later in the broadcast, acknowledged it was Henderson.

Jack Hunt was a WR his first 2 years at LSU. He was moved to Safety in 2002, the same year as the Bluegrass Miracle.

That's correct. I have his helmet from his freshman year. Has #83 on the back. The lightest helmet you will ever pick up. He was one hell of an athlete!

I didn't have the radio on. I remember slumping in the lounge chair considering going outside to do some yard work and blow off some steam...then it happened.

<----glad I stuck around and saw it live.

Hmmm. I also saw on a youtube comment that someone said it was re-recorded. I can't find the original full audio of it anywhere. I've searched and searched and that one youtube video that I posted is all I can find. Does anyone know where we can here it?

If I remember correctly, he re-recorded it for the Inside LSU Football show, which shows game highlights set to Jim's broadcast call.

I noticed another difference in the two clips. On the original, Hawthorne says "Caught it and scored! Last play of the game, I don't believe it."
LINK

On the other clip that appears to be re-recorded, Hawthorne says "On the last play of the game." If this audio clip is just the original, but with Jack Hunt cut out and pieces moved around, you would think that you would hear Hawthorne say this same phrase in the original. But he doesn't, and it's clearly said in a different tone.

My theory is that the audio without Jack Hunt is authentic until after Hawthorne says "Caught, caught." After that seems like a re-recording.

I was at work listening to the game on the radio. My first thought was why the hell was Jack Hunt in on our Hail Mary offensive package...

You're mixing up parts again...bolded part was removed.

quote:

Caught! Caught! Touchdown!!! Jack Hunt! Caught it and scored! The last play of the game I don't believe it! I do not believe it! The Tigers pull off another miracle! It was Devery Henderson who caught it.

He then continues with:

quote:

On the last play of the game! holy cow! I've never seen it happen before in my life!
