What gives with ST coverage this year? Seems like there are two components to good coverage: talent and technique. We traditionally put our best athletes on ST (even starters on offense/defense). Are we not doing that any more? Also, how hard is it to coach lane discipline?

we havent been this bad at kick coverage since i could remember...we usually beat the punt and meet the kick returner to the 10 or 15 yard every time

How much of it is on the punter? Those punts against Florida didn't have much hang time

Enlighten BDP. He obviously is having a problem with this too.

Most if the issues are direction and length of the kick being different than what the return team is expecting. Kickoff was better this week, not sure if JK can be fixed at this point.

Logic would say it's Bradley Dale Peveto given we were pretty damned good under the last coordinator.

Funny thing is, according that that wiki article he was the ST coordinator (and linebacker's coach) from 05-07. Which I think were pretty good years.

Is it the yips or something?

The guy was no. 9 in the country last season, averaging 45 yards a kick. He shanked one here or there, but was really good otherwise.

Flash forward, he ranks 102.

The part that people don't really get is talent. Now, I'm no BDP fan and he gets his share of the blame but humor me for a sec. Would you say we're as deep as normal at LB? How about bigger, stronger WRs? Athletic TEs?

Well, generally, that's a bulk of your ST coverage teams. The James Wrights, the Duke Reillys, the Kadron Boones, etc. we're really not too deep at 6'2, 225 but can fly positions.

Couple that with a failure to stay in lanes, and poor kicking/punting add in 1/2 of Mal-veto and there you have it.

See that was where I was going. We don't have the studs on coverage now.

Someone has failed to enlighten the players of the importance of lane integrity.

Secondly we cannot punt well.

It doesn't take ANY football skill or athletic ability to NOT run out of your lane unaided by the receiving team.

The kick coverage team has done just that on nearly every kickoff this year.

I wonder how many concussions he caused and/or received in his playing days.

I'm having an argument with a friend...BDP is listed as a ""LB" Coach...how much input does he really have on the "LBs?"

I keep hearing some mumbo-jumbo about how the punter isn't hitting the area that the players are assigned to cover. My thought is: why the frick would you assign players to leave swaths of the field uncovered anyway?

Lane Integrity - it's what STs do..

there is zero reason we should be this bad in kickoff and punt coverage. i think we improved on k/o coverage last game (or maybe punting was so terrible i didn't notice). I'm putting the majority of this on JK - he needs to sit until he's over the yips.
