LSU’s assistant coaching opening could go to a familiar face.

Robert Kirby, who coached under Johnny Jones at LSU in 2012-13, is in the mix to fill the coaching position vacated by David Patrick, sources tell Tiger Rag.

Kirby, who has been the assistant head coach at Memphis since leaving LSU in 2013, has 32 years of coaching experience at the Division 1 level, including tenures at Mississippi State (1989-1993 and 1998-2010), Georgetown (2010-12), and Houston (1993-1998).

In Kirby’s lone season at LSU with Jones, the Tigers were 19-12, the best first-year start in program history. Kirby also helped spearhead the 2013 LSU signing class featuring NBA forwards Jarell Martin (Memphis Grizzlies) and Jordan Mickey (Boston Celtics), as well as 2016 draft hopeful Tim Quarterman. That 2013 group ranked No. 5 in 247Sports’ evaluations.

Patrick departed LSU earlier this month for a similar position at TCU. Kirby, meanwhile, could be on the move due to Josh Pastner’s move from Memphis to Georgia Tech. Kirby has also been linked with positions at Texas A&M and Western Kentucky.

Must be pretty desperate, it's pretty much a 1 year deal coming back here.

It fills the David Patrick role, but this team desperately needs someone who can actually teach the game. Jones has no plan except to "play fast." There is no real structure to their half-court offense and the defensive strategy is atrocious. LSU prioritizes forcing steals (so they can get our and run) over forcing tough shots. LSU led the SEC in steals per game, but was near the bottom in opponents fg%.

It's as close to YMCA or AAU basketball as you will get at the D-1 level. Jones can't fix it (he hasn't for 16 years. Why would year 17 be any different?), so he needs someone who possibly can.

I'm just gonna try and enjoy this next season as much as possible and get my hopes up (probably foolishly) that we make a good hire next March.

He's had Musselman and Suhr. If those guys couldn't make up for his deficits coaching the game, there isn't a guy that can do it. The problem isn't that there isn't someone on staff with the knowledge or skill set to coach the game, the problem is Jones is impeding that process in some way.

he needs a come to jesus meeting. someone needs to clearly identify his strengths and weakness and encourage him to surround himself with people who will take care of the weakness. To me Jones should be like Bobby Bowden, shake hands, Kiss babies, pass out purple and gold nets, Recruit, schmooze the big donors, and let his assistants handle the day to day stuff. Hire someone to run the offense and someone to run the defense.

Just frick off already. We know you think JJ is doing a "bang-up" job.

You've been in every thread defending him like he was your daddy. We get it.

Now shut the frick up.

not sure how, we're going to have many of the same issues on next year's team.

Overall chemistry may be better now that Quarterman's cancerous arse is gone.
