Pretty much everything I've said has gone over bayou sam's head based on his last post. We are on the same page but the means to achieving that isn't by redistributing money from our main successful offshoot.

LSU cannot unilaterally fix the funding problems in Louisiana higher education, or correct the fact that the state funds FAR too many podunk colleges and universities. It's not like Chancellor Jenkins said "hey, instead of getting rid of SUNO, let's just take money from football!" Why can't people just be happy and proud that the athletic program, in addition to winning championships, is tangibly giving something back and undermining the claim the academics and athletics have to be in conflict? Some people just like to bitch, I suppose...

Because this negatively affects the athletic program.

No shite.

This wouldn't even be happening if Louisiana politicians had actually given real support to public higher ed.

Also it's ludicrous to think that the Athletic dept will ever be unable to do whatever it wants financially.

If Jindal had the kahunas to change the state charter to allow very small across-the-board cuts to all state agencies instead of """""""""""JUST"""""""""""" health care and higher education....but no. Jindal has sorely disappointed me.

Well, I presume they are concerned that these subsidies will (a) be perpetual and ever increasing; (b) further increase ticket prices and mandatory donations; (c) be detrimental to our exceptional athletic programs; and (d) disincentivize effective structural changes in the funding of LSU academics.

The problem isn't alleviated by this measure. Not even close. It pretty much only hurts the athletic side to save a couple of liberal art teacher salaries. The net effect on the university is marginal at best. The net effect on the athletic dept is much more significant. This isn't a win win.

This is the real issue here

Sounds like BS to me. The university will just mismanage the funds like they do with tax dollars.

All politics are the same way.

UGA an UF have athletic sides independent from the academic side regarding budgetary matters. Those are also two of the best academic schools in the conference. Explain that to me broseph.

UF athletics donates money to the academic side also. They have donated over $61 million since 1990 according to this chart.

According to this article about Kentucky increasing their athletic donations to academics:

"In a March 2011 story, The Herald-Leader noted that the $1.7 million annual donation UK athletics made to the school's academic side was significantly smaller, by percentage of athletic budget, than that then given by Florida (6.5 percent), Tennessee (5.2 percent) and LSU (3.8 percent).

The UK Board of Trustees Athletics Committee approved a $91.9 million budget for 2012-13. The larger donation represented about 3.3 percent of the budget."

It doesn't look like LSU athletics giving money to academics is as isolated as some may think.

Just out of curiosity, in what way do you feel LSU has mismanaged funds?

They don't have to though. This "PR" move sounds mandatory to me but pawned off to the masses as good will.

Wow, who knew that $7.2 million per year just covered "a couple of liberal art teacher salaries?" Sounds like "liberal art teacher" must be a much better gig than I had been led to believe...

People, the claim that this is somehow a real blow to athletics is laughable. READ THE ARTICLE. It says that athletics keeps 100% of any surplus up to $3 million, 75% of any surplus between 3 and 5 million, and 50% of any surplus beyond that. We are talking here about a relatively small portion of the Athletic Department's SURPLUS funds. It's not like this is going to cause the track team to go without shoes, for God's sake!

That's not really my point. I'm on my iPad and posting in greater detail is a pain in the arse on this thing but this type of taking really just hurts the athletic department. Does anyone realize how our successful football team helps enrollment figures.

You have said this repeatedly, but given no legitimate reason as to why.

This is analogous to our states higher education approach. Instead of acting like Texas and pouring tax revenue into the flagship, we spread our money thin to a bunch of crappy directional schools in our state. This is the same shitty economic principle st work.

Well said.

The athletic department's been pumping money back into the academic side of the university for years. This would just formalize that.

Exactly it won't change anything. It's just something so when all the retard who don't understand how this stuff works go "Well why doesn't the Athletic Program give money back to the school since it's doing so well?". They can say
"Motherfricking retard we do and here is proof. Learn your facts you hippy bitch before you go spouting off about how the Athletic Department isn't helping the school. This school wouldn't have any students without the athletic program."

And I hope that's exactly how they say it
