O should do better at LSU than Herman will do at Texas. Texas has major systemic problems. LSU has minor systemic problems. O has a better staff as well. This will tell us nothing about Alleva, except that he has a meddlesome boss and needs a new mbb coach.

Herman had $6m/yr on the table from LSU. LSU was pre-built, ready to compete for championships. He chose to allow his camp to leak the LSU interest to the Texas media. Alleva halted negotiations and walked away from Herman.
Now he makes a cool million less yearly coaching a Texas team still in rebuild mode. If he tanks, it's his own fault.

Herman will be like Chris Peterson at Washington. The jury will be out for a few years, he'll have some doubters, but eventually will put it all together. There is, however, a very real possibility that Texas is stupid enough to fire him before that happens.

Of course not. Given what Alleva knew at the time of the hire, Herman was a better choice than Orgeron. But once UT fired Strong, Herman was no long an option. Alleva's mistake was then thinking that O was the 3rd best option after Jimbo and Herman. No attempt was made to interview other candidates to verify that was actually the case.
