You can criticize Saban. He clearly made the wrong call. Hindsight is always 20/20. Recognizing that Saban has gotten it right in big games more often than he has gotten it wrong is not giving the guy a pass. This isn't a zero sum game. If Miles had the same level of success as Saban then the majority of LSU fans would give him the same amount of grace in the same situation. But he hasn't. That is the way the world works. If Saban shitting the bed in big moments starts to become the norm then the conversation changes.

The point comparing Miles and Saban is silly

I thought the whole point of the OP was to compare the two and the criticism they should get. Miles' has made glaring blunder after blunder his whole career here.

Saban has a low risk call back fire on him and he deserves the same level of criticism?

Pennymoney you are correct that it was the right call to make that kick. As always people focus on BS.

The problem with his decision wasn't that he went for the FG but that he had the 11 slowest people in the entire state of Alabama in to prevent AU from scoring in the likely event of a return happening.

Satan made much dumber calls during the game then even having the slowest fattest guys on the field during the kick. But lets all focus on the 6th worst call of the game by Satan.

I agree that trying for a score is the right call, but the safety of a field goal at that distance no longer exists. With the Hail Mary, the risk is much lower, while the reward is the same. Yes, a Hail Mary is less likely to be successful, but there is no chance it gets returned.

Any coach that attempts a 53+ yard field goal is now gambling a touchdown, and that had become apparent to regular observers before the kick.

Of course, passing up on the chip shot was a much bigger blunder.

Crazy.

How many are lost with no time on the clock on a missed FG attempt?

He had nothing realistic to lose if he misses. No way you don't take that kick.

Tell me again how many times in NCAA history has that ever happened? Beckham made it what 4? IN the HISTORY of the game?

The reason it's low is because COACHES DO NOT TRY 57 YARD FIELD GOALS VERY OFTEN.

I think a better question is what is the percentage of fg's returned for a t.d. when the player catches it in the end-zone. then you have the true risk/reward call.

His in game decisions? He hasn't had to make that many, but he's had his share of coaching mistakes.

I don't think Saban got a free pass

but winning NCs as of late certainly helps his case in this instance

I wouldn't say mediocre, but his strength is preparation. He's always had mistakes with his in game decisions.

Saban has a cupboard full of crystal balls, so I'd live with that call.

Miles...not so much.

Wide right and at least 5 yards short?

The ball landing in the EZ says it wasn't close at all.

I would not care what he has, there is no way I'd agree with the call, personnel, etc. The dude sent out a redshirt freshman kicker on the biggest stage for goodness sakes...because "he could kick a 60 yarder in practice."

Maybe if the SEC home office was in Baton Rouge...And Miles could get the calls that the officials make for Bama...And maybe if we got Tennessee and Kentucky every year for our SEC - East opponents like Bama, instead of Georgia and Florida...And maybe if ESPN would love us enough to lobby for us to have a shot at a BCS title even when we don't even play for the conference championship and have already gotten beaten at home by the opponent.

Just maybe, Yes, just maybe under this scenario, Miles may have a few more Crystal balls and Saban may have a few less!

But hey, Life's not always fair...But it is, what it is!

Les may not have as many Crystal balls as Saban, but this is why I'd take Les any day of the week over Saban.

hyperbole much?

I'm not really into the comparisons that much, but Saban did make quite of a few of the so-called "blunders" that Miles bashers berate him over...
