This is my biggest gripe about our offense. I've got no problem with a power running game.
Just don't make it PREDICTABLE! Go with a 3 WR set to spread out the defense, and then run.
I just can't believe that a coach thinks it makes sense to consistently show a run formation and then run off-tackle.
To me, the goal of every play should be to confuse the defense and run the exact opposite of what they're expecting.

Take away AJ's 80 yard TD (which was a good play by AJ, no doubt), and he was 8-21 for 160 yards. Sorry, but that ain't good. Yes, he looked better in the 2nd half, but you just have to admit that those overall numbers are mediocre, at best.
But let's say he completes two of those screen passes and the pass to Smith for a total of 60 yards, Then he has a passer rating of 208.2
However, let's say your aunt has a penis. Then she's your uncle.

I hope we throw that first half offensive game plan out the window. We just refused to throw the ball on anything but third down even though we had close to like 1 ypc. And when we did throw the ball, it was some cheap screen or short pass. I was actually happy to see Wisconsin scoring because I knew that meant we would have to ditch what we were trying to do on offense to keep up.

somehow I think CC will be able to handle this. the way we lose is when we play a team with an outstanding secondary and they man our WR's.

80 of those yards came on one play
I love the people that use this garbage.
Complain about the 4 yards and ac loud of dust, but then make sure everyone knows that 1 play was for 80 yards.
I'll take 1 play 80 yards 10 times out of 10

les miles has a hand in that. foolish or not, he wants to portray a "toughness".
to me, it's a bit stubborn to not play to your strengths. diarse, dural and quinn are very capable pass catchers. wish they would run and throw out of the same formations and not be so hard headed.
being that stubborn in the first half almost bit LSU in the arse.

We could be predictable and still beat a bunch of teams with stacked lines and one WR, but not teams like Wisconsin. Wisconsin had the top 5 run defense in the nation last year. Those guys rotated a lot so they were almost like co starters. Also, don't give me crap about their conference, because the Big 10 is all about running the football. Teams like those and Bama, etc, you have to spread em out to run on them.
So while what we usually do does work on most, it won't work on all. I personally think mixing it up with 3 Wide as the base, should be the way we go.

agreed. and in the second half vs UW, it worked!

With the way the TEs played and the way the WRs played we might not see to many TE sets the rest of the year

instead of scrapping those plays, I hope they continue working on them.

I think there is a valid point to consider when those 80 yards came on a BROKEN play.
The question is whether or not that play is reflective of what we can see going forward. If Jennings keeps making plays while scrambling, then we are in better shape than we probably realize.
No matter what, in my opinion, Jennings did enough good things in that game to make me optimistic.

passing and running out of those formations would have the defense constantly guessing
Why make them guess when we could just run the old conservative offense like we did the first half.

They could probably run the majority of the offense out of 3 Wide with a Single Back and a 2 Wide, 1 TE I Formation. 3 Wide Spreads the field and opens gaps for the back and showcases the WR talent. The I with Smith remains balanced (if he does better than his spectacular drop on Sat), but also offers a lead FB and a physical WR in Diarse for blocking. That's a lot of balance.
Just run a multiple scheme based heavily on these two sets, then sprinkle in Shotgun, Max Protect and Heavy I sets for certain situations, and you have an offense that's pretty hard to get a bead on. I know this is a simplistic approach, but it sure beats the hell out of Crowton's 2 plays each out of 10,000 different formations. That made LSU's offense so easy to scheme against.

There is another thing that was at play in this game. We all know by now how vanilla Miles wants the gameplan to be pre-SEC schedule. Even against Oregon, we didn't go very far outside the box. In fact, the only time I can think of where he didn't stick to this was against a highly-touted VA Tech team in 2007. He tried the same thing in this game, and it almost cost him. I guess he thought our O Line could just plow through, but that definitely wasn't the case.
I am hoping Cam's influence will make this less of an issue going forward this season. Jennings proved he can throw effectively from the pocket. They need to take advantage of that to open up the run game.

i think he had to show cam and miles that he could be trusted. I think he did just that.

How many yards did Manziel rack up on "broken" plays. he extended a play and threw a perfectly placed ball to the WR. I don't understand why everyone wants to discredit that.

I would like to see us go 4 wide to spread the field to run. Dural, Diarse, Quinn, and I guess Dupre should be able to get defenses to back off.

exactly. you can't cherry pick stats.
a yard is a yard and a TD is a TD.
doesn't matter how they happened.

My biggest gripe during the Miles era.....
It seems to be a pride thing....we are going to tell you where we are running, point to the hole, and still run you over.
It would be nice to see a trap every now and again.
Hopefully CC will help change this mindset.

We started running on their nickel and throwing on their run fronts.
When we went to one back we forced them into a nickel package. That put six in the box and we had six blockers. God please allow us to do more of this.
