chief was a very good DC. not great. his problem was he presided over a defense that didn't recruit shite except DB's. it worked for his first few years because he inherited some damn good DL and LB's. but he didn't demand accountability with Brick Haley and he didn't do his job in recruiting LB's. it showed later in his career.

he's what he is. and the aggies are now realizing it.

We had some good defenses under Chief. The only thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is how he left. But I'll take Dave Aranda over him all day long. I'm very thankful we have him and I hope he sticks around for a long time.

Yep. Chief's 2011 version was the perfect modern day D. He was a solid DC; at the time I was sorry to see him leave, even more disappointed when we hired Steele, but absolutely on cloud 9 about Aranda.

Chief is an excellent DC. but he's not perfect and doesn't have anything at A&M close to the talent he had at LSU or at Tennessee in their prime. He's not much of a recruiter himself, so he needs to have assistants that are elite at it. Outside of Garrett, he's not working with much. talent makes a huge difference on defense as is the attitude. that's still a finesse team. they don't have that hard-hitting persona.

He kept us competitive in a lot of games which masked Miles's incompetency for a long time.

This. I don't understand where the Chief hate comes from. The team leaned on him and his defenses delibered every year except 2013. All people want to remember are the two late losses to Bama but it's silly to expect to beat Bama without scoring points. Those losses are on the offense. As usual.

Well some of those teams had really good D's. If LSU stops someone, the d is amazing. If another team stops LSU, the offense sucks.

That damn ND game. The first drive was like 8 freaking minutes. That's on the D.

Clemson, their longest drives came early in the game, when the d had a month of freaking rest.

The d is responsible for some wins, but it shat the bed time to time as well.

Really? Why is he over rated? It's not like LSU is the only place he has coached. He did damn well in Tennessee as well. He's won many coaching awards, many players who played under him are now in the nfl (not just from lsu).

What makes you say he is over rated? Because he is not "one of us" anymore.

I pulled this from his bio at Tennessee:

quote:

Since 1995, Chavis' defenses have held their opponents below a 100-yard rushing average in six seasons, and eight times during that span the Vols have ranked among the top three in the SEC in total defense.

And yes i am aware the football landscape is different now than it was then, but you're making a baseless claim. The man has been at TamU for 1.5 years AND improved their defense from what it was in 2014. Yeah I'm happy to have Aranda as DC as well, but let's not act like Chavis is/was some hack DC who only looked good because of the talent.

From his soft arse passing coverage to his third down situation, his infamous mustang packages, lazy recruiting, bad talent recognition (DJ Welter), and consistently soft run defense.

the Mustang was probably the best thing about him. never a more perfect marriage of scheme and player than the Mustang and Tyrann. and it generally allowed us to feature a lot more of our DB talent than normal, because we could put 6 guys out there. our run defense was pretty stout. even the 2013 D eventually got that part right.

and honestly, I was stunned at how much man/ press man we played given all the "3rd and Chavis" talk from UT ppl when he was hired.

Chief's defenses have been somewhere between very good and great for most of the last 20 or so years, in the toughest conference in CFB. with all the offensive changes.

he had his warts (the LB rotation in particular drove me nuts), but on the whole I was happy to have him.

now let's keep Dave.

Didn't like the chief. Especially with the small linebackers, and 3rd and Chavis

If someone leaves LSU, then some posters hate them forever as a knee-jerk reaction. No logic involved.

I appreciate what Saban did for LSU football. He rebuilt our football program and brought us a National Championship. Try to get anyone else to admit that they appreciate Saban.

I appreciate what Chief did for LSU football.

Wasn't those the same NFL type players with the chitty Co DC debacle that caused chief to get hired?

He has been shown to be correct in his reason for leaving. If our offence was as non productive as when Les and Cam were running the show, the defence would be worn out by now.

Chief is a very good DC. However, he is not very good on 3rd down and isn't great with adjustments. He is good at coaching containment with his edge DEs but doesn't do much scheming outside of his comfort zone.

And that 3rd and Chavis and prevent defense doe...

We won a lot of games due to Chavis. There were tons of games when the offense was totally anemic and the defense and ST set up the win. The worst thing about Chavis was the last drive of the half. His prevent was really not very good.
