More importantly, media should monitor its tone before it bites the hand that feeds it.
No freaking way. The media is paid to evaluate the program and they should do so objectively.
Unlike certain boards that seem to imply that you have to talk nice about LSU or risk being banned.

Today sports radio has moved from the fringe to the center of attention. Perhaps, Internet will weigh in soon enough and tilt the balance.

In large markets where people have more to do than just follow their local football team, you may not find the passion of tiger fans. With that passion comes a responsibility to nourish it
You must have been a big fan of the Nazi's back in the 30's and 40's.
The responsibility of the media is never to "nourish" the tradition of a team it covers or to stifle honest analysis or refrain from asking critical questions about coaches, players, or the progam in general.
The BR market is already soft by anyone's standards.
Any good market deserves a watchdog media.

I heard your name mentioned on a radio show recently - props.
I'll concede your point when we use a TD app on our favorite device to follow these conversations.

they can't watch practice and he never gives any injury updates, what is being revealed from behind the curtain?
He tells them secrets about how his daughter's swim team is doing and how much he enjoys this damn fine team. I fear he's giving away the whole enchilata

WJBO changed their news source from CBS to Fox because the station manager did not like Dan Rather's coverage of President Bush)

The best way to change the tone of reporters and fans is easy.
Start producing the way the program should with such talent.
Cant stand the heat, then maybe join the Pac-10. This is the SEC where you put up or hit the road
Time waits for no one.

fricking communist. Take that control the press shite out of here....
This. Should we let Baghdad Bob do the postgame show? (Everything is fine. The score was 100-0. Our coach is a God.)
If the program wants the bitching to stop, they could start hanging half a hundred on everybody. Until then, we will exercise our God-given American right to bitch.

We are barely a newspaper and 1-and-half radio station market. We look at NOLA and Shreveport writers for alternate views.

This post is about BR media, not about media in general. What should the media do in a small market to keep it viable?
Remember, BR sports talk used to be a very small segment of sports media. Today, radio/TV personalities have higher recognition that print media.
All media works pretty much the same in this country.
They are generally corporations that have a resposibility to increase shareholder value.
To that end they publish whatever they think will generate the most revenue - usually through advertising. I'm sure they've realized by now that often times controversey, outrage and general demagoguery attract the most eyeballs and ears. Thoe more eyeballs and ears you attract, the more value your advertising generates.
Disseminating information is simply a by-product of the above process to one extent or another. That is, informing listeners/readers/viewers is not the primary concern of the media.
The example of the Arkansas reporter in the OP shows that her employer thought her actions ran contrary to attracting customers - and thus not increasing shareholder value. If I understand correctly, it was completely internal and the university had no influence on their actions.
As far as nourishing a passion within the Tiger fan base, if that helps increase shareholder value, look for it. I predict that the media will use demagoguery up until it produces diminishing returns, and then start to nourish a passion for the team so that they maintain customers.
That's just how I see it.

Last night's show by Charles Hanagriff was a veritable bitchfest with the host's certitude about the future of the program.
Without a doubt. Hannagrif has turned into a whiner.

I do like his calls of the baseball games - he just seems to have the right low-key, monotone voice for that sport.
