re: Should LSU play in a 3-4?

The NG gets double teamed 90% plus of the time. How much does Locoture weigh again? So you take the player with the most exp. and the only one that has taken a meaningful snap in a SEC game and move him to a totally different position. Then we have RS freshmen, true freshmen, and Mickey J trying to play 3-4 DE's. So basically you have two spots that appear to be the weakest on D and are turning it into three spots with a switch to the 3-4. This doesn't include the LB problem because Kwon, Debo, Louis, and all the rest except maybe Beckwith are ILB's in a 3-4.
So the answer is to put the entire front seven all into new positions they were not recruited for to account for one injury.Smart?
Obviously, Valentine's arrival will not hurt.

I think that LSU should play in the defensive scheme that the coaches (who have FAR more experience than anyone on this Board) feel gives LSU the best chance to win football games.

No. The Mustang package is much better suited to Chavis's scheme and the type of athlete that LSU has. (basically a 3-2-6 with the extra safety coming down into the box often)

Wait, are you telling me it's not as easy as switching your defense on Madden or NCAA??!
No way. To the OP, please tell me you have never played football or you're joking.

We don't have what it takes to run an ideal 4-3 either do we? At least 3-4 puts more talent on the field with our LB depth. I mean we at least gotta take a look at it
Not possible to teach a bunch of kids a 3-4 with three weeks until kickoff. Not even remotely. Its harder to teach than a 4-3. That and you need a mammoth NG, which we dont have

You could run some odd-man fronts and not hurt. You can't do it all day long but you can get away with it. Though not with the Alabamas and the Wiscy's of the world obviously.
What I'm thinking is that with the loss of Q Thomas, Fall Camp is going to be an absolute battle royale to take that other spot. My money is on Herron to take over the starting spot, with Johnson, Gilmore and Bain rotating to spell.
Not sure any team can make it through with a 5 man rotation on the DL in the SEC, so what I expect to happen is for Rasco to log time at DT by sliding inside with Beckwith reprising his role at DE out of necessity for some 33 Stack Looks where Beckwith puts his hand in the dirt pre-snap. We could-maybe-get away with Hunter doing this same thing.
It's all about managing snaps. If Valentine gets here tomorrow, I'm expecting him to be unable to contribute at least until the 3rd or 4th game of the year (not looking at a schedule right now; sue me). The reason is conditioning.
Think about it like this: Last year, LaCouture was an Early Enrollee and we still only plugged him in situationally. He was absolutely not a kid we could lean on for an entire drive. He was extremely productive but from a combination of technique, conditioning and stamina standpoint, he just wasn't ready. Even after a Spring, an offseason, and a Fall Camp.
Now, compare that to Valentine's situation. Has he been working out? We don't know, he hasn't been allowed into the S&C program this offseason. The other Freshman have been here since June, so he's-at best-almost 90 days behind from that standpoint. Has he been eating right? Again, we don't know. He hasn't been at our training table.
Am I saying he's out of shape? Am I saying that he's put on bad weight, etc? No to both. What I am saying is that he will be counted on situationally at best. Getting your rotation guys a blow once a quarter for a snap or two here or there. History and past precedent tells us that.
All in all, I think we will be just fine on the DL.

Thank you. Anyone suggesting that LSU run a 3-4 base is fricking dumb.

Will we run some three man fronts? Yes. Will we ever run a legit 34? No.
Chief likes fast linebackers, and will not hesitate to give up size for speed.

I don't know what a hank linebacker is?
Are you talking about an elephant linebacker? He's not big enough.
