I'm sorry to hear Dandy Don is ill...but unless he's officially affiliated with LSU in some way that would differentiate him from all the other thousands upon thousands of anonymous LSU fans, then I really don't see why LSU should do such a thing.

eta: What's next, LSU recognizing milestone Birthdays of LSU fans...
Dan Borne: "Tiger fans, please direct your attention to midfield where Vice Chancellor and Athletic Director, Joe Alleva is with Millie Dumblatt from Erath who turns 100 today... Also, Vic and Margie Shuttlebahm from Chalmette are celebrating their 50 wedding anniversary. Let's give them a Tiger Stadium salute!"

Many fans start their day by reading DD and have for years. Dandy Don is a great LSU fan, he bleeds purple and golde. He is a war hero, a Louisiana icon, and a great American.
I start my day reading the Advocate.
Yes, Dandy is a great fan. He's a nice guy and I'm sure he is in many folks prayers and we are sensitive to his condition.
However, there are many great Tiger fans and they have not received such acknowledgement. I don't see Dandy as a Louisiana icon.
There is no precedent for LSU to honor him in this manner.

Some of you people really have a problem with obsessing over Dandy Don. I have no issue with the man. He's an LSU fan and as such I respect him for his fandom, but give me a break with he's been some huge asset to LSU and its success and history.
He's a nice old man that had connections with high school football and is an LSU fan. He started a website to share his information, and I respect him for that. He made some money on his "donations" and more power to him.
I don't think LSU has any reason to honor him at a game 1) while he is still alive nor 2) when he passes. He's a fan just like everyone else.
I am sorry that my priorities aren't focused on honoring fans for being good fans. I'd rather them honor our vets that are risking their lives on a daily basis to protect us LSU fans and our freedom. I'd rather them honor the police officers, firemen, teachers, rather than a football fan.
Dandy seems to be a nice guy. I don't really go to his site, but those that enjoy it have it mean a lot to them. Good for them, and I hope THEY show their thoughts and prayers to his family. I simply don't believe LSU should make some type of deal out of his situation.
And to the guy saying I've never experienced tragedy and suffering, you can GFY. You have no idea who I am and what I have been through.
To any of Dandy Don's family members or even Dandy Don himself, I'll keep you in my prayers. God Bless.

You guys are really fricking clueless, about DD, and even this website. Neither of which are just some fan run websites with no real connection to the university. He has helped LSU in a lot of tangible ways, some of which are known some that will never be known.
He will be acknowledged by the university athletic department at the appropriate time for his contributions.
Believe it or not, LSU was actually playing football and was pretty decent at it before most of you were even born. Even in the 50's and 60's, and thousands of people have helped build this program and school over 100 of years, without and without fan fare and acknowledgment.

When I was away from Louisiana. I could always read the Dandy Don LSU sight. And get a friendly word about the LSU sports programs. From a very true LSU fighting tiger fan. The passing years might change the stiles that we seem to live by. But will never change the true friendship of devotion that we receive from the true friends that touches us the most. Dandy Don is a devoted friend of LSU. I will always feel friendly towards Dandy Don.
He will always be a part of the LSU tiger family. How could we not think well and often of him.

all I needed to see was the Christopher Hitchens quote to know that your entire post was execrable and not worthy of reading

Yeah it would be a huge imposition to acknowledge the guy before the game

I say yes mention him...

Geeze guys, he's not dead yet. Save the tribute for when he passes. I hope he's around for a long time, I've always enjoyed reading his page.
Once he passes away, I'd have no problem with a little TS tribute

Posted by oilattorney4lsu There is such a disconnect between human beings these days. The age of message boards, hiding behind computer screens. To say its dumb to honor anyone is, well, dumb. He is a person who is hurting physically and emotionally at this very moment. Whether or not LSU honors him at one game or not is not the idea. It's the idea that someone had a compassionate thought and it's struck down by a few as "dumb" because they feel he is irrelevant. Guess what? He's probably more relevant and important to the LSU community than others posting on this board as of late, especially you. I'm sure he's relevant to his family and friends. He's relevant to me, you little shite. Show some respect to those who are suffering, little boy. You're obviously too young and haven't been struck with tragedy yet. Let me tell you, I guarantee you, it's coming.
Perfect.

I will leave it to the administration to decide whether to recognize dandy don. I am sure that many folks who contribute large sums would be put out that this humble man who is second to no one in his love for LSU is recognized before them. LSU will be great after Dandy as it was before him but their is no question that Dandy has opened an avenue of information and a feeling of in the know about LSU athletics and more importantly football that the outside the loop folks might not receive. In this way he is very special to me and many folks I know. I also do believe that Dandy is a help in recruiting. If it would mean something to Dandy Don to be recognized as our number one fan, I would be the first to stand up and applaud him.

Should LSU honor or acknowledge DandyDon Friday?
I heard Rhatphuc Hobley will be on hand to lead the stadium in a momnet of silence and prayer for him.
What a POS...Like him or not. No need to be an a-hole!

i think a simple moment of silence (thats going to happen) for him and arky frosh TE that died will be plenty.
A moment of silence for someone that isn't even dead.
That's going to be a first.

It goes alot further than this. Alot of ppl will have forgotten this, but when Nick Saban first came to LSU and was in the first few years of recruiting. He would sometimes call Dandy Don to ask about a player who they might have interest in because of his close relationships with the high school communities. I am not saying that LSU should or shouldn't acknowledge him. But to say he is simply a guy who started a website is doing a huge disservice. DD might be the most knowledgeable person about Louisiana high school football and players in history.

I think the fans who know him and follow him should do something for him.

Among this circle of sports-fanatic friends, Long's telephone conversations with former LSU head football coach Nick Saban are the stuff of legend. Long will only say Saban called him a few times ' "some good, some bad" ' but won't discuss any private conversations he's had with LSU coaches. The story goes that Saban was upset with Dandy Don because Long had broke news about a coach he was getting ready to hire that still hadn't accepted the job. Don's friends say that after the initial admonishment, Saban called Dandy Don a couple more times in later years to get his opinion on some high school recruits.
