You can say that Pistol would've averaged another 8 points a game if they had the three point line back in his day. On the other hand, people can say that he wouldn't have averaged 30 a game if they had allowed African Americans to play.

you mean like the people in these pics of pete?

Obviously photoshopped ... we all know blacks weren't allowed to play basketball when Pete was playing.

Love Shaq, but I would rank Bob Pettit ahead of Shaq in LSU's greatest players.

Pistol Pete without a doubt. The greatest ball handler and passer that has ever played the game. Pete could do amazing things with the basketball that no one before and no one since has been able to do. Pistol Pete was the greatest ever. Shaq, while a good player, was not in Pete's league.

As far as the comment about Pete not playing against blacks, you need to do a bit of research. Pete played against a lot of black players in both college and the pros. He would light up anyone, regardless of their skin color.

Pettit should be in any discussion about LSU greats - he was a two-time All-American and led the SEC in scoring for three seasons (freshmen couldn't participate). Pettit led the Tigers to their second SEC crown and first Final Four. In 1958, Pettit defeated Bill Russell and the Celtics to win an NBA title by scoring 50 points in Game 6 in 1958. Pettit set an NBA scoring record of 29.2 points per game in 1958-59 (he later increased that 31.1 points and 20.3 rpg). He won a scoring title (25.7 ppg) and rebound title (16.2 rpg) in his second season in 1956 and scored 20 points and had 24 rebounds in the All-Star game that year. Pettit was NBA Rookie of the Year (1954-55), four-time NBA All-Star MVP, two-time NBA MVP and one-time NBA Champion. His 16.2 rebounds per game is third to only Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Pettit was the first player to eclipse the 20,000 point mark. To each his own opinion about who was the greatest, but Pettit's COMPLETENESS of attaining championships at Baton Rouge High, LSU (SEC) and the pros (NBA Title) was actually something Pete nor Shaq could do, which should make him part of any conversation about LSU basketball GREATS.

They should make a 3-on-3 NCAA video game. I'd put Pete, Shaq and Big Bog (converted from center to shooting forward) against any two players Jordan wants to pick from N. Carolina or any UCLA combination. I'd buy it.

Most SEC teams during that time did not allow black players a scholarship. It's a fact. Most of Petes games were played against slow white boys not quick black boys. BOOM!

Pete also lead the NBA in scoring in the mid/late 70s. There were plenty black guys in the NBA at the time. He also dropped 68 Pts on Walt "Clyde" Frasier of the Knicks regarded as perhaps the best defensive guard of his era

I love great Tigers.

Shaq was a great Tiger.

Pete was a great Tiger and is still the greatest college basketball player of all-time.

My appreciation of both does not make them equal players.

Pete changed the college and pro games forever. No other player will ever have the metamorphic impact to match his. In my opinion, as well as other expert published opinions, nobody yet has come along with the same skill set. Pete could do things with the ball that others have yet to duplicate.

I watched him in the old barn that served as LSU's basketball arena before Pete's palace was built. I've never seen anything like him.

There are a couple of great biographies that have been written about him. I highly reccomend checking them out of your local library. They are great reading, especially the more recent of the two.

The only way this question could be asked is if the questioner never saw Maravich play. Just saying. . .
