QB notices a certain coverage and calls a "hot" or changes to secondary routes for the recievers..at least thats what ive noticed about that signal... the other signal where he puts his thumb on his back is a change in what hole or gap he wants the runningback to switch to..sometimes they use this as a bluff to make the other team change their play thats why peyton manning does it about 4 times per snap
