Self-loathing is part of the South Louisiana character . If you grew up in South Louisiana you know what I'm talking about instinctively. It has to do with French culture and Louisiana history. It has to do with being pushed-around , having Little Man's Disease. It's why half of every neighborhood in South Louisiana lives to troll the other half. It's why being a contrarian is so highly valued in South Louisiana culture.

When I was a kid it was people from say, Pointe Coupee Parish randomly pulling for Notre Dame and running down LSU, to the same thing now. I met a women this week that grew up in Baton Rouge, has ZERO connection to the University Of Alabama, and has two Bama flags in her yard, and sports a big Bama bumper sticker on her SUV. She knows less about college football or Alabama then you know about origami. She identifies with the flavor of the day to deny her neighbors in some way...and that is epidemic in South Louisiana. It's the psychology here. And right now it's time to get out the long knives . As a semi- outsider-someone from here, but not of here, I see it clearly.

I'm NOT telling anyone how to feel about Les Miles and LSU, I'm just dreading the whole soap opera that is about to unfold. The cannibalism part where everybody pulls out the long knives. All the malice everybody has for everybody else, and the way it's done for sport here, just wears my arse out.

As a non-native who attended LSU, I think you have it spot-on. Remember the "catastrophe syndrome" that Saban referred to? Bingo.

And like you indirectly stated, I've always thought it came from the French side of Louisiana as well. Alabama is not dissimilar to Louisiana at all but for that one aspect; yet, as far as I can tell you don't see this kind of thing coming from there.

Your quote

quote:

to deny her neighbors in some way

says it all like I never could have in a million years.

100% truth. It's why when walk ons is up for sports bar of the year, the ability for some to say "I'm not a huge fan, but shite let's get this for Louisiana!" is not there, and instead people get so upset at the thought of it.

Eta: It's also why Louisiana people can't stand so many groups who have deep pride for themselves, like other fans, people from Texas, etc. Just a general negative attitude.

The Cajun culture is inherently contrarian yet the French language is very soft, with words used to soften the impact of statements, like "Mais, cher..."

I don't know of any language on the face of the Earth that uses affection as a weapon like French does.

You are absolutely 100% correct. This place is full to the brim of people who will go the other way no matter the circumstance. It's full of self loathing catastrophe syndrome people. I know plenty of people who don't watch a single minute of college football or care about sports in general who hate LSU and root when they lose. Only because they want to see their neighbors upset. Like it's some sort of pride.

Plenty of people get a absolute kick out of the trials of the people around them here.

i can't relate to what you or the OP are talking about, nor have i observed it in general. it certainly is not a value my cajun family shared.

sounds more like OP and those agreeing are simply awful people (condolences), and projecting.

also, our beloved football program is in trouble, and the causes have les miles and les miles alone written all over them.

but by all means, carry on crying about your vacuous perception of our culture, while calling others "self-loathing."

I think this extends to every aspect of life in South Louisiana. It's not unique to LSU, LSU is just a large Institution and therefore an easy target.

I know you know this guy if you are a South Louisianan. The guy is Cajun and my neighbor. A good guy. He's on "the board". He know what's going on with every family in the neighborhood. He's very concerned with his lawn. But he will only wave after being waved to first, and even then he turns his head mid-wave, so that the wave ends in you waving at his arse and the back of his head.. He won't give you the satisfaction of the "full" committed wave. We grow these guys like weeds in South Louisiana. He's like a character from Seinfeld.
