The SEC is first to use a 20 second time limit for pitchers to deliver to the plate. I wonder for what purpose?

There is no mention of the time for the batter to stay in the box without stepping out several times at bat. If the pitcher doesn't deliver in 20 seconds a ball is added to the batter. I would like to think then that a strike would be added to the hitters count when he plays games by stepping out.

The whole thing is crazy.

The 20-second clock between pitches only comes into play if no runners are on base. A ball will be called if the pitcher does not deliver the ball within 20 seconds and he is responsible for the delay. A strike will be called if the batter is not in the box ready to take the pitch with five seconds showing on the clock.

They're looking for ways to speed up the game. Softball initiated a similar rule last year. Thankfully they didn't take the same approach as the NCAA did with football and reduced the game to seven innings. We now have less plays per football game and more commercial time with a negligible difference in the time it takes to complete a game.

I know. But what amount of time you would consider that helps speed up a game of baseball? I really don't care but why are they always trying to fix what's not broken?

Your link is from another publication. It has details the advocate didn't have, like the hitter. Thanks. As we can also see is the reason for the rule and that is to commercialize it for TV.

I agree with you on that point. One of my great appreciations for the game of baseball is its aversion to time restraints. Oh well, at least we'll see a couple of more Yella Lumber commercials during the Tourney.

Pretty sure it has been there- for high school for sure. Maybe they just started enforcing it but softball tends to be quicker than baseball cause they can't take leads, don't pitch from stretch, etc.

In softball the runner can't leave until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand.

Good thing Steve Trachsel isn't an SEC pitching coach somewhere...
