Scheduling Oddities

I noticed a few weird trends while looking through historic LSU football schedules.

LSU traveled to Athens to play Georgia on October 17th, 1953. These two schools did not play each other again until October 14,1978. 25 years!

Similarly, LSU played Vandy in Nashville November 2nd, 1957. They did not play each other again until October 9th, 1976.

What's the deal with this? I understand not playing them as often as our closer rivals, but gaps of 25 and 19 years for intraconference opponents seems pretty ridiculous. Does anyone have any information about what went into these scheduling decisions? I'm very curious.

Scheduling was very weird for a while. If you weren't a permanent rival, you could go ages without playing someone. We're in the same division as Auburn, so we've played them every year since 1992, but before that, there was a 27-year stretch where we didn't play them at all (1942-1969).

The league adopted a uniform 6-game schedule from 1974 to 1987, and added a seventh conference game from 1988 to 1991. Through this period and through the earlier years each SEC school had five permanent opponents, developing some traditional rivalries between schools, and the other games rotated around the other members of the conference.

Probably has to do with SEC making a change in scheduling in 74

I think we have played State the most followed by OM and Bama. Florida may be our 4th most common SEC opponent.

My First Game in Tiger Stadium 1969 Auburn vs LSU. It was the ABC national game. Auburn missed a FG and XP. Been hooked on Tiger football ever since

Yep.
Miss St, Ole Miss, & Alabama

Arkansas & Florida are about the same but we have a longer streak with Florida, every year since 71.

I think all of this plays into the future SEC scheduling (i.e. no Auburn in 24)

Correct, though we have actually played Tulane more often than Bama.

Below are the 20 teams LSU has played the most. Bold are current SEC teams

Mississippi State 116 games played - 77-36-3

Ole Miss 111 games played - 65-42-4

Tulane 98 games played - 69-22-7

Alabama 87 games played - 27-55-5

Florida 69 games played - 33-33-3

Arkansas 68 games played - 43-23-2

Texas A&M 61 games played - 35-23-3

Kentucky 58 games played - 40-17-1

Auburn 57 games played - 32-24-1

Rice 56 games played - 38-13-5

Tennessee 34 games played - 10-21-3

Georgia 33 games played - 18-14-1

Vanderbilt 32 games played - 24-7-1

South Carolina 22 games played - 19-2-1

Louisiana 22 games played - 22-0-0

Louisiana Tech 20 games played - 19-1-0

Georgia Tech 19 games played - 7-12-0

Texas 18 games played - 8-9-1

Miami (FL) 13 games played - 10-3-0

Notre Dame 12 games played - 5-7-0

All will go away next year with elimination of East and West divisions. More frequent matchups will result.

If I remember correctly years ago teams made their own schedules. Not all SEC teams played the same amount of conference opponents. The bare used to schedule an extra conference game knowing a 6-1 record was better than 5-1. It got him a few extra outright SEC championship titles instead of a co championship.

Scheduling games has come a long way. My first season as a student at LSU was the fall of 1981. We started the season with a home game against Alabama. Total regular season games were 11.

good stuff. It's kind of crazy 3 of the least common sec opponents were charter members, if vandy was a charter member. Just surprised we played Ark & A&M more.

In the 60's, LSU played 6 conference games and Tulane counted as 0ne of them even though they had dropped out of the SEC. how weird is that.

Not weird at all.
Tulane left the SEC in June 1966.
So, they played 6 years of the 60s in the SEC (1960,61,62,63,64,65)
and 4 years of the 60s not in the SEC
(1966,67,68,and 69)

Talk about 'oddities', was there not a season or 2 that bama scheduled 7 SEC games and 'won' the conference title just because of the 'extra' game...lol Gotta love the REC in action !

We rarely played Auburn until the SEC went to eastern and western divisions.

That 1969 day game with the blocked extra point was unique and memorable for a number of reasons.

The SEC thought that should be a rivalry because Charlie Mac came from there.

Yep. We used to have 2 permanent East opponents, and those were Florida and Kentucky. Once the format changed from 5-2-1 to 5-1-2 (only one permanent East opponent), we dropped Kentucky.
