Saints wanted Duke Riley - could he have said no to Atlanta?

I know that players technically don't have any say as to where they are drafted, but this particular situation (combined with the Ruben Foster deal) got me to thinking:
Let's assume for the sake of arguments that the Saints really were about to draft Duke (multiple reports say this is true). Now, if they had already called him, and then Atlanta calls, could Duke have told the Falcons that he wanted to be a Saint and to F off?
The situation with Foster played out the same way except for the end reaction - he was on the phone with the Saints when San Fran called; he wanted to be a 49er so he hung up on Nola. But what if Duke wanted to play in New Orleans and knew they would draft him if he could convince the Falcons not to? You would think they would have some second thoughts if he started bad mouthing the organization and professing his allegiance to the Saints (already knowing that they were going to take him).

Why would he not, from the Saints, if they took him with the very next pick?

Id rather go play with Debo.

I forgot where he went but if they didnt even up drafting him then he would get his draft signing bonus still. but if they drafted him and he said no then he wouldnt get that same signing bonus

No, he'd have to re enter the draft next year. Once a player is drafted that team has exclusive signing rights for a year. Only thing he could do would be what Eli Manning did to the chargers and demand a trade or what bo Jackson did and play baseball. Had Duke done that he'd never play football again

i didnt think you could re enter the draft. i figured that player would be a undrafted free agent after that one year

Bo Jackson was drafted twice. If you never sign a contract then you can re-enter

I don't know when the the player actually becomes "drafted". What I'm thinking about is trying to dissuade a certain team from drafting you when they call, knowing you're getting picked by a more desirable team with the very next pick.

That's what John Elway and Eli tried to do, but it's a little different when you're the projected #1 overall pick

That's not what happened. The 49ers picked before the Saints. The Saints didn't think San Fran was going to pick him, that's why they called him.

The Saints are not a more desirable team than the Falcons.

I know that. So lets say that, hypothetically, foster had wanted to go to New Orleans. What I'm curious is if he had blown off the 49ers and stayed on the phone with the saints, telling San Fran he didn't want to go there. I know this wasn't the case with Foster, but it could have been with Duke.

I mean he could tell them no all they want, but the second the 49ers submit their pick for him, he is under their control for at least a year.

This is a stupid thread....of course you can't say no to a team that drafts you unless,,,,you are john Elway and Eli Manning....for obvious reasons.

I'd rather tell you to F off.

Saint's are all about that coulda-woulda-shoulda bs this year.
Oh we wanted Foster, but we didn't want to trade up to get him, so we took an OT for a position that was not a dire need like a DE, LB and CBs.
Or we still needed to draft DE, LB and possibly another CB after the 1st round, but we chose to go with a safety and then a fricking RB.
I feel like the front office in NOLA doesn't watch the saints.
The point is they coulda gotten foster/riley/etc, but it's a known fact that the Saints don't give two shits about LSU players and have a major disconnect between needs and best player available.
I'll continue to watch former LSU players on other teams come in and beat up the Saints.
