The transfer portal had to have Saban thinking about retirement. Letting players transfer every year was the final nail in the coffin.

He left the Dolphins because he couldn't be king of the mountain and impose his will on the players.

With the portal and NIL, that is where CFB has been headed for the last 2-3 years and as we're almost there, he wants nothing to do with it.

I am surely no fan of saban, but all this BS about its level playing field is just stupid. It’s not a level playing field. The SEC is going to be harmed by the current rules in the very near future. Most SEC teams do not have the money to compete with East and West Coast schools. They just don’t. The SEC is only hope is that people stick with them because of how good they typically are but it won’t be about money outside of Texas.

We will see more named coaches leave college. It is now easier to coach in the NFL. You have to recruit, re-recruit your roster, NIL, the portal and lord knows what else

This is what will degrade the sport. The amount of bull shite a college coach has to put up with has become absurd.

This is kind of dumb.

It is too much like the pros for him now. He is only happy getting more than his share.

He admitted to Alabama, when they hired him he wasn’t the best coach but he was the best recruiter

And he won 6 NCs because of it. Talent always matters more than scheme. Schemes can win games, but talent wins championships.

He lost the edge he had with the Amite Barber Railroad with NIL and he lost the ability to stock 5 star back ups year after year with the Transfer Portal.

Saban projected this years ago. NIL and the transfer portal are bad for college sports

Yeah man it was really bad for bama when they got Jahymr Gibbs last year.

Some of y’all are acting like the transfer portal was the death of saban when in reality he used to his advantage.

Everybody could just stack their rosters with five stars. Why didn’t they? Saban did it - at LSU then at Bama. He had no advantage over two dozen other coaches except one - he was better than them.

I don't need a union to make a living, but I like to see THE MAN lose, and the actual worker win as much as possible.

He dangled the carrot better than anyone. Now the players eat carrots off of gold plates everyday

No. No they’re not. But he is leaving because of it. Because he can’t hoard and stockpile talent like he could before which gave him the advantage over everyone else. It’s not a coincidence that they haven’t won shite since the portal and NIL because a thing.

Another factor for Saban was the Texas loss. He knew the SEC was becoming a juggernaut with OU & Texas joining. Bad enough for him, Georgia was out recruiting Bama and now LSU finally has a 'real' coach, not a clown. Of course, add in what everyone knows now with the portal and NIL- no more stockpiling talent like he and Bear Bryant previously did. It's going to be interesting watching what Bama does!
