Dude went about 15 feet out of the baseline and should 100% be out.

Looks to me like he executed it perfectly but the ball fell out after the tag. Probably wanted to save his arm the needless throw. Batter could have been called out for running outside the path.

I was always thought that as soon as you go backwards between home and first base that you're out. So no reason to tag.

I wouldn't categorize it as boneheaded. He was never going to prevent the other runners from moving up so he rightfully concentrated on the batter. He simply dropped the ball when applying the tag.

Not really a bone headed play. He did the right thing, just dropped the ball. In that scenario the only way the runner is safe is if you drop the ball.
