How did LSU go from Old Gold to the yellow they wear today?

I understand that old color televisions did a poor job with the traditional gold and the color was changed to the more 'distinctive' yellow??

Seems the purple has changed more recently. I like the yellow, want to say its canary yellow. But my pesonal opinion is it looks better than old gold. Thats just me.

So why didn't Notre Dame and Army change to yellow?

I remember in a LSU marketing class in the early 90s we discussed this or something along these lines, but more of that when we moved to the canary yellow the TV networks, especially night games on ESPN, liked the brightness and found it attracted viewers...and marketing of merchandise moved more.

Wouldn't doubt that, peter.

Just saying and if we can recell, that the yellow has been more predominant in later years due to TV and marketing. Draws attention and is unique with the white jerseys, etc. While Some teams switch it up a lot for attention...tradition but more importantly certain colors and branding in marketing serve a huge purpose....

The purple ain't what it used to be either,
Looks more bluish now. Also the little strips on the shoulders need to go back to full stripes.(spelling intentional)

well i still call it gold just for tradition's sake but maybe it also has to do with mardi gras and the krewe of rex going with a more yellow color than old gold.

The St. Louis Rams did just the opposite--went from their school-bus yellow to an old gold look after their 1999 Super Bowl win.

Army colors come from the ingredients in gunpowder: charcoal (black), potassium nitrate (grey), and sulfur (yellow --> gold). Army would not have changed their colors for a couple reasons.

Less TV time when color TV went live.
Lot of gold color on uniforms for the cadets - would have meant much bigger change than just a football helmet.

Dont you guys know the history of how L.S.U. selected their colors? (The game vs Tulane Mardi Gras story) Tulane bought up all the green ribbon for their uniforms, leaving LSU with Purple and Gold. Mardi Gras colors are Green, Purple and the CANARY YELLOW hue of Gold. So L.S.U., was originally using the Canary Yellow ribbon to adorn their uniform, NOT Old Gold. (I think all the football uniforms back in those days were all Grey) Don't know when or why the official school color was changed to Old Gold, but the first use by L.S.U. on a uniform was the Mardi Gras Canary Yellow/Gold color.

I'm pretty sure Mardi Gras has no canary gold color

That's debatable.
