There will certainly be a lot of movement with the draft and the portal still upcoming but an early look might be a little interesting to some.

The 2021/2022 roster had 43 players listed, 3 being redshirts. I will stick to those 43.

Players already in the portal I will assume are gone. More might enter the portal before July 1st just in case things don't work our for them but that doesn't mean they are gone.

Pitching: 20 of those 43 listed are pitchers. The target number for the 40 man roster next year will probably be 19. We carried 19 this year and 7 of those saw very limited action if any.

16 of the 20 are eligible to return. Fowler is in the portal already so that puts us at 15. Our signing class consist of 13 pitchers. I will list Guidry with the position players. As of now we have one portal pitcher signed, Tebrake.

That puts us at 29 currently. The portal will add to that number and the draft will take some away. We will have to revisit this after those two things are finished with.

Just to give some perspective. If we sign two more portal pitchers and lose 5 to the draft we are looking at 7 pitchers gone due to injury or attrition. I expect the attrition to come from players currently on the roster. Realistically we could be talking about only keeping 9 of the pitchers currently on the roster. 9 players on the current roster saw signicant time this year and then you have Lansville, G. Fontenot, Coleman, Edwards and Hellmers. So keeping 9 out of those 14 will not be easy.

We will see what happens in the draft, portal and injuries but I expect some tough cuts when it is all said and done.

Position players:

We have 23 players on the current roster out of the 43 listed.

22 are eligile to return but 4 are already in the portal so we will count it as 18 players. The target number will probably be 21. There are 10 players in our signing class and we haven't signed any from the portal yet.

My guess is we add 2 more portal players and lose 5 players to the draft putting us at 25. The numbers don't look quite as tight here but I expect 1 or 2 disappointing cuts.

To complicate things a little further. 5 of these 40 we keep need to be covid seniors. Tebrake, Gervase, Bianco, Dugas, Beloso, Merrifield and Bollman fit that criteria giving them a better chance of making the roster. This is another reason Tebrake was a good pick up and I would like to see them target some more seniors in the portal.

What position players would you say are gone?

I don't want to speculate too much but there are quite a few on the bubble. Beloso, Bianco, Merrifield, Safford, Cranford, Simon if not healthy, Leto if his bat doesn't come around. Ruddell maybe from this signing class.

We will see how many portal players we sign, how many are covid seniors and how many the draft steals. I would expect to lose some of those guys but I like them all. So even losing one or two is disappointing to me but it will mean that our roster is improving.

IMO, we will lose: Berry, Doughty, McManus, DiGiacomo, Holt, and Drost.
We also could lose: Jobert, Dugas, Thompson, and Bianco.
Others who might transfer are: Merrifield, Cranford, and Safford.
The second two groups are possibilities and not my predictions.

Jobert, Dugas,

These two would surprise me. Jobert worked pretty hard to come to LSU and it was his dream school.

Dugas may not be in the OF next year, but I think he’ll be a Tiger.

The rest you listed wouldn’t surprise me.

I just don’t see Jobert’s situation moving forward. Do you only use him as DH/PH against a rhp. I prefer a DH who can hit 3 or 4 hole and bat over .300.

Jobert and Dugas are both draft risk. I think they will both be back but they are not certain.

I know Thompson is controversial but I think he is our starting SS until someone shows me different. Romero and Guidry will be freshmen obviously and are ranked high a lot because they can hit. I wouldn't be surprised if we find a starting SS in the portal but it hasn't happened yet. I would be really surprised if Thompson moved on but not impossible.

I could see DH being a hotly contested position next year. If Jones and Frey make it campus, Leto improves, Beloso comes back, Travinski. There are a lot of guys that are mostly bats. Jobert is no lock to DH.

I know Jobert was very boom or bust, but 18 dingers in the SEC is legit. I’m hoping he can work on using all parts of the field and be a more consistent hitter next year.

I look for Safford and Merrifield to be casualties. I think Cranford stays, JJ likes him. I’m hoping Dugas can stay, he’s an all SEC caliber player when healthy. I’d love to see him play 3rd.

You rely on Jobert getting better. The guy hit 18 homers this year. If he can cut his K’s down by 10% and hit .280, he’s in the lineup every single day.

This summer will be big for him.

Simon is getting healthy and throwing. He can play both a position and/or pitch. In HS, he was 92-93 on the mound with a high spin rate curve and 3 command pitches. As a freshman, he pitched in the State Championship game against JC when Ripoll was the starter and only gave up 2 runs in 6 innings. If SS or an infield position won’t work for him, He can legit pitch in the SEC.

That's great to hear about Simon. Definitely a player I am rooting for. I hope he gets his shot next year and shows people what he can do.

Jobert can hit. He always has and probably always will. I'm just saying there are guys that can match 18 dingers and if they can do it with a higher average, he is no lock. If he is drafted, I would actually bolt if I was him. He has more to lose coming back than he has to gain. He could improve his batting average or he could sit the bench. I know that is hard to believe after 18 dingers but the competition is real.

Where is Thompson going? Transfer? Don’t see that happening.

There is no denying his talent. Can he put it together? We don't know. I'm not alone though. Mikie Mahtook said the same thing about Thompson on his show (he is our starter until someone unseats him). D1baseball has him ranked as ranked #50 on their list of top 100 2023 college draft prospects. Jay has called him a future big leaguer. Keep in mind we also might have struck out in the portal for SS. Two of our top targets appear to be going elsewhere. We might still get a top prospect in the portal, but like I said, it hasn't happened yet.

Simon is healthy, we have a good chance at Romero and Guidry. That competition might make us less attractive to a portal player infielder and our need not as great.

What derailed Lansville this year, injury? I remember seeing him pitch a few innings back in March.

Thompson is gonna start somewhere in the infield next season and hit close to .300 again, imo.
