Rollouts should become a staple for Brandon Harris

Everyone remember the nice 3rd down run Harris had for a first down in the 4th quarter of last week's game? This was definitely called as a pass play, and Harris escaped pressure and picked up a critical 1st that bled a little extra clock.

While I don't think the play was actually called as a rollout, Harris looked really natural running it. With his wheels, I would love to see Cam work it in more. Anyone who knows football knows the advantages it offers with a mobile QB. It cuts the field in half, making for lower risk reads and easy throws. The running threat of Harris adds pressure to the defense. And then last, if the D blows it up, all Harris has to do is float it out of bounds and live to play another down, as grounding isn't in play.

As for using this as a one-read and go or just a flat-out designed run, the rollout adds a less risky way to involve Harris in the ground game. A little success passing out of rollouts with our WR talent, and the D will have to back off and respect that. This gives Harris the option to get to the sideline, step out, and avoid a hit. While I love the zone read as a way to make a defense think, there is more risk of Harris getting popped by an LB or Safety. With limited depth at QB, that has to be considered.

I wondered all last game, why not some roll-outs and short play-action plays....as our coach almost lost the game

Yeah. He showed that last year vs State and in the Spring Game. I understand the desire to run most of the offense from the pocket, but these designed rollouts seem like a natural fit for Harris, and a low risk way to get more balanced.

I agree but disagree that you just run one route. Run your routes toward the roll side and maybe send one guy down the seam to keep at least one safety or create confusion. You could have two WRs run with him across the field and one WR or TE running down the middle of the field and throw to the open guy. Then you have the option to run if they play coverage or pass if they rush. Only negative is that a LB or DE will be running free at him but you can have the backs block for you and release for a pass also. That's what I'm saying this offense could be lethal if we would be creative. Hopefully we work all this into the offense and by the middle and end of the season LSU will be hard to stop! GT

Probably in the secret playbook. Could this be the week Miles breaks out the secret playbook?

The Jet sweep was in the secret playbook, then Miles moved it to the regular playbook late last season, so there is some precedence for moving plays from the secret playbook to the regular playbook.

The threat of Brandon Harris running should always be a constant thought on defenses's minds.

I actually agree with you. I didn't mean run all rollouts with one route. I meant mix in some one read and go or just straight runs in with multi-route plays. We would still have 3 or 4 WRs in these sets. They would just be used in a blocking role to give a different look and get Harris an open seam. Just another way to mix things up.

Rollouts are safe single and double route plays.. They can work but shouldn't be his mainstay.. He is a pocket passer who has the ability to get out of trouble and gain positive yards on covered plays..

why not do super safe and simple pass plays to build reps and confidence instead of deep throws that are low % plays on 3rd and long?

sometimes i don't understand how some times with the offense have to be so difficult.

I am not one of the Cam haters, but it has long been his philosophy to combine a strong run game with down the field passing. I agree with you, and think it would be smart to mine that easy-money short passing game, like State did against us in the 2 be half last week. With Harris' arm strength and accuracy, those routes would be really difficult to defend.

lsu has basically no consistent short passing game. at all. it's out routes or deep passes it seems. it's a weird passing system with no risk. at all.

all of the importance is put on not throwing a pick.
