My top 5 LSU qbs are Jones, Tittle, Russell, Hodson and Ro. I would put Risher in the 6 to 12 range, just below Herb Tyler.

No contest--Hodson by far!

Hodson with the talent the team has today (and a coach willing to cut him loose) would be a Heisman candidate.

His senior year he WAS a Heisman candidate. If you want to know how good, gutsy, and a leader he was, watch a replay of the entire Earthquake Game against Auburn in 1988. That should tell you all you need to know.

I had the pleasure of seeing Jones in person and Hodson on TV; Tittle was in the NFL by the time I was born!

Risher had trouble completing the center snap. If you weren't there to witness it you wouldn't believe it. We fumbled about seven snaps one game.

No one could have managed that '82 offense any better than Risher. He was a great leader his senior year.

Meh. He was a great quarterback, statistically. He was also a great freshman quarterback.

BUT, to be the best ever? I don't think he had the intangibles. Russell, on paper, is the best we've had.

That's just a fact. To argue another candidate, you're going to need some support.

No he is not. He had on half of a good season and a great bowl game and cashed in. I'd take the season Ro had over Russell's any day.

Well - if I'm picking any of these guys at "their" best year, I take Davey, precisely because of intangibles. Guys like Russell - not sure if I can depend on him in a dogfight. He had so many physical tools, but Davey is an old school warrior - for that matter, Tyler, Mauck and Flynn - not nearly the QB that Russell is on paper - but all three (four counting Davey) left it all out on the field.

I would rather go to war with guys like that. But, that doesn't change the fact that Russell is, on paper, the best QB in LSU history - whatever value you place on that. If you're going to be subjective, well that's just everyone's individual opinion at that point.

Same reason Hodson is better than Risher - it's just math.

What in the frick??
You might want to check his stats.
JR's Bio

ETA:
Just for shits and giggles, let's compare JR's and Davey's stats. They both had great final years, but JR's was better.

JR's Stats

Davey's Stats

I think JR's performance in the NFL clouds his memory of just how great he was at LSU.

I know the stats and I still take Ro over Russell any day of the week. Russell also had a better group of receivers. Reed was great but after that the rest of the cast don't match what Russell had.

Hodson got a hell of a lot of mileage out of his freshman year

This is always the answer to all "who was the best LSU QB" questions. But yes, I would give Hodson second a bit over Y.A. (even though he was a great pro).

So you know the stats, and yet you say that JR only had a half of a good season? Lulz, ok.

Yes as I stated earlier in the thread. Jones in this age of football even with conservative arse Les would absolutely be Heisman contender.

Ro wasn't as erratic as JR was his first year to start. If game is on the line, I want Ro or Hodson before JR

Tommy may have been the best basketball player on campus during those years also that never played for Dale Brown

I can confirm that. Was a participant in the Dixie basketball camp that year entering my senior season. He was in the same class.

About 200 high school players at that camp. He was the best player there.
