Amazing LSU only had 3 starting QBs in the 80s.

Hodson was definitely better, but not by as wide a margin as some believe. He benefited by playing for Arnsparger. Risher had knucklehead coaches.

Risher had a noodle arm, and Hodson's wasn't much stronger. Hodson was a very cool customer who executed well. Risher was a fierce competitor. Both were tough as nails.

Risher had trouble completing the center snap. If you weren't there to witness it you wouldn't believe it. We fumbled about seven snaps one game.

You're mother would be right. Bert was the best QB in modern LSU history (post-1960) by a mile and a half.

Just a few comments I've heard bout Tommy/Risher/Wickersham over the yrs: played golf with a former TE teammate of his after they had left LSU & he said "Hodson holds the LSU record ( and here he got profane) for the most "success" with the coeds on campus in a career"; Tommy paid for his dream home with his signing bonus, in cash. And saved most of his NFL salary over the yrs. Risher made the comment during a round of alumni golf that he credits all the team's & his success as a QB to Mack Brown, the OC; he hated Jerry Stovall. A former OC said that Wickersham was the "dumbest QB " he ever coached & they had to dumb down close to a half of the offense. But had "a cannon for an arm".

Wasn't he recruited hard by Stanford?

I have no way of knowing if any of that is true, but that's some top quality info.

While this argument seems ridiculous, it's not worse than the people who don't recognize Jamarcus Russell as the better QB than Hodson.

Jamarcus was not better than Hodson. His skill set was leaps and bounds better, but Hodson was a much more effective QB.

JR had the arm and size but TH was the man. IF JR had TH mind and intangibles he would be one of the best qb's in the NFL

True and there should be no debate that Bert Jones is the best in the modern era. Remember he played for a more conservative coach than Les Miles in era when you only threw ball when you had to. He would kill it in today's game. His pro career was cut short by injury, but for that we would talk about him more today.

I was playing in an alumni golf tourney with the TE & Hodson down in Houma & this was said to myself & another while Hodson was looking for his ball in the woods. So it is true to that extent. As for Risher's comments, they were made at a booster bash in Metairie one off season, so, again, it is true to that extent. As for the Wickersham comment, it was made by the former OC to a very good friend, related by marriage to the OC.

tommy hodson may have been the best qb LSU has ever had. he was indeed a field general and could put the ball where he wanted it. his only weakness was his arm strength was average but he compensated for that very well.

nope. tommy hodson was a better college qb. nothing against Jamarcus and he definitely had a much better arm but hodson was more successful and for 4 years. I think he edges out bert jones BUT only because chollie mac only played jones for one half of a game. if he had played the whole game I believe jones would have been the best. if this team had tommy hodson at the helm I would predict a nattie.

While agree with Hodson over JR, there is no way I put him above Bert Jones. You actually support my argument by mentioning ole Cholly Mac using the two QB system even when he had a future all pro QB. If Jones played even when Hodson did his numbers would be sick. He had nearly as much arm strength as JR and better work ethic he would have been a star for sure.
