I'm more convinced than ever that we just saw the two most complete teams in the SEC

Then that's sad considering it's hard to be a complete team when you can't field a defense that even threatens to stop the opposing team

I remember McCarron saying after last year's game the Saban meets with the QBs the night before every game and goes over the plan for just such a situation, including which plays to run against the likely defense they'll see.

If this is actually what happens, which probably isnt, then that's fricking stupid. You dont review situations the night before a game for what may happen on the last drive. Things change, there is no way of knowing what defensive alignment they'd be in, what injuries occured to that point, what plays have been successful throughout the day, whether our O-line is picking up blitzes that game, etc. Wayyyyyy too many variables to factor in when considering what to do on the last drive of the game before the game has even started. I'll let you continue to suck Saban off though.

The elephant in the room is that A&M, Bama, LSU, and UGA are easily the best teams in the conference. The defenses will all be torched in the match ups.

It will be Big 12 football.

I know LSU is full of Chicken Littles, but the the best teams in the SEC do not have defenses that will slow down these offenses.

It makes me sick to think that my favorite team has now become a Big 12 team.

I feel the same way.

The thing is everyone says Defense wins championships, but I don't think there is a contender with a legit defense. At least a defense that is as strong on defense as the big time offenses this year.

Re-watching the game I came away with almost EXACTLY the same impressions you did. We have improved defensively from the previous 3 games. The D-line is playing the run better than they have. That was the main thing I was looking for... were they holding their water better than they have been and they were. Freak was playing within himself better and not getting blown off the LOS like he has been. Our ends played solid against the run.

Linebackers just are what they are. The most important unit in Chavis' scheme is the weakest on this particular defense. That's both scheme and talent. I don't know what his answer should be to address that but it's got to be addressed. Kwon should be on the field from this point forward.

And you're right. At some point in the second half our defense settled in. When Georgia executed, it wasn't so much us but them. We did stall them at times.

I am not as worried about the secondary because I think we have talent back there that will improve every single game.

My biggest concern is how creative Chavis will get to mask our weaknesses at LB. He is going to have to do some things there. We need a safety in the box on just about every 1st and 2nd down. Loston's doing us little good defending the deep ball so he might as well play to his strengths in the running and short passing game.

When LSU played Oregon 2 years ago, did our defense make their offense look average, I think people would agree yes we did.
'13 Georgia offense is 10 times better than 2010 Oregon. Oregon couldn't run on any of the top 6 sec defenses that season. Georgia can. gurley is a beast and marshall is quite good. Georgia has a legit sec o line. Oregon's o line that year was outmatched by lsu. you're not comparing apples to apples.

quote:

Would you consider A&M's offense good, did our defense make their offense look average last year
a&m got LOTS LOTS better on offense after the lsu game. if they played later in the year, like after the bama game, that would have been a very different outcome. lsu was flat after bama and a&m came alive. a&m would easily have put up similar numbers against us as ole miss did.

So you are wrong a good defense will stop a good offense
I never said anything to the contrary and your points are flawed. lsu and Georgia's defenses aren't great but, they weren't horrible in that game. both offenses were incredible and made really fantastic plays. there's no question lsu has taken a big step backwards but, the defense isn't as bad as some people are making it out to be.

Chavis should simplify the playbook for this team. The only logical reason why Welter, Loston, and Martin are still playing is the younger more athletic players don't know the calls. He should make the defense master a small number of plays so he can put the best people out there.

another takeaway from the game Jordan Allen can't play the run at all. He was getting ushered up the field like Rahim Alem or blocked down on all game.

But what I really noticed on the rewatch, that I didn't see at all live, was that I really think both defenses actually played pretty well against two of the best offenses in the country.

Stopped reading there.

As good as LSU is, much of LSU's success was a result of the disaster of a secondary that Georgia has. Add the fact that Geogia decided to blitz a large majority of the time and paid for it. To ignore that is foolish.

As for LSU, the lack of pass rush, ability to stifle the run even a little bit, and continuous blown assignments simply cannot be labeled as anything other than a disaster.

The problem for both teams is that they were college defenses defending NFL offenses.

you must have missed ole miss '12, west Virginia 2010, Clemson '12. sometimes, offenses get yards/points and it's up to the other 2 phases of the game to step up. the defense hasn't been 2008 horrible yet.

can it be fixed? I have no idea. what's wrong with the front 7? I have no idea.

state has a solid defense and they can run the ball which controls the clock. I would be surprised if we win comfortably and I would not be shocked if we lost.

They were horrible, out of position and 3 of 5 TD passes were on complete blown coverages, not great offensive play. Players were tentative and played like they had no direction.
and there were plenty of plays where they were in great position and were right with the receivers. yes, they're inconsistent. but in all honesty, Georgia is 9th in the nation in passing. they will challenge pretty much any secondary, especially when the front 7 is weak.

What I saw on Saturday was 2 of the best NFL offenses in college football. Pound and grind you on the ground and make you pay through the air when you overcompensate. LSU hasn't had this type for a long time. Any other team in the SEC (and yes, that includes Bama) and LSU or Georgia is mopping the floor with them.

We had a few miscues and mistakes that the coaches will iron out but I have a feeling we will see LSU v. Georgia part II in Atlanta. Winner goes to Pasadena.

Man, maybe you missed it, but Mettenberger played a fantastic and gutsy performance under some outrageously difficult mental circumstances.

He was also pressured pretty steadily and kept delivering passes into small windows in big 3rd down situations.

Yeah we had some receivers running open at times, but that, like UGA did to us, had a lot to do with our scheme on those plays working to perfection.

But if you don't think that UGA D can play and tested us repeatedly I don't know what to tell you.

People always talk about LSU being a great looking team off the bus, well UGA has that look this year.

Their OL and DL are monsters, and they don't just look the part. Those guys can play, and they showed up ready to work on Saturday.

Murray is going to rewrite the SEC passing record book, and Gurley and Marshall are NFL players stuck on Saturdays.

Sometimes games get away from you, and sometimes a storyline can become the axis the game revolves around.

This game was about Mettenberger and Murray and that's exactly how it played out. It was a great game to watch and outside of a couple of plays I'm proud of the way our team responded on such a stage.

Again, this is not to say there are no issues on defense. I was outspoken about our problems last week when many others were still convinced the D was five. But I have no doubt that the rest of the teams on our schedule are not looking forward to playing us on either side of the ball (The Texas A&M Manzies not included ).

Can't wait to see how this all plays out because I really think this team has a 2007 feel to it. :fearthehat:

If a few LBs & DBs can turn it up as the season progresses you're right.

Good summary enjoyed the read.
