What is an acceptable record for Coach Ed Orgeron this year?

This thread was started back in July. I tried bumping it, but apparently it's anchored.

It's interesting to see how many people thought 9-3 was the absolute floor for LSU this season, and while that is still attainable, it will look much different than most thought.

The first post pretty much sums up my opinion:

Miles winning 9 wasnt good enough so why would it be for O? Must win 10 or more or what was the point?

If you told me before the season started that we would consistently play 20+ freshmen in our games, I would take 9-3 in a heartbeat.

Playing 20+ freshmen constitutes a "floor" level record.

How many of those 20+ are actually playing in the rotation compared to the number who only play on special teams or in mop up duty?

Maybe so.

I just find it interesting that 9-3 was considered the floor in the summer, but if LSU finishes 9-3, there will be plenty of people praising the season as a success.

I predicted 9-3 before the season with losses to Bama, Auburn and UF.

Now I don’t know if they exceeded expectations or not by beating Auburn and UF....

expectations change during the year. surely you know that.

there is also differences is short term expectations and longer term ones. I think 9-3 regular season is solid this year but I wouldn't be happy with that every year. if we can win the bowl and go 10-3 my expectations will be exceeded.

there is little year to year continuity in college football (other than saban) as evidenced by jimbo's year. recruiting is not a science and injuries can really negatively effect the W-L record.

I predicted 10-2 and I'm going to stick with that.

I thought LSU would finish the regular season with a 10-2 record (that has been my prediction for at least the last 5 years) with losses to Bama and pick a team NOT named Mississippi State or Troy.

In my opinion, now if they do go on to have a 10-2 record, I'll be disappointed because they lost to Mississippi State and Troy. Although a win over Bama would sure be sweet.

I wouldn't. That would mean we are the in the SEC title game. I don't care how we get there if we get there.

This. Also, how many are not really freshmen, but redshirt freshmen?

That is a big difference.

Grant Delpit
Jacob Phillips
Tyler Taylor
Greedy Williams
Eric Monroe
Neil Farrell
Glen Logan
K'Lavon Chaisson
Kary Vincent
Austin Deculus
Saahdiq Charles
Ed Ingram
Tory Carter
Zach Von Rosenberg
Connor Culp

I'd consider those 15 to have played a significant role in this season. Maybe not now that we've found our stride a bit, but at some point or another we were relying on guys in that list to help us win games.

Some play because they are the best option no matter what, but some play due to injury. Being thrust into playing time due to injuries has forced many of these young guys to step into situations they are likely not ready for. Heck, you can even add Myles Brennan to this list when he played against Troy.
You've even got guys like Jamal Pettigrew getting snaps against Ole Miss late into the game.

The point is, these guys are being asked to step up in either big or small roles. We are relying on the youngest players on the team in various situations to contribute.

EDIT: "20+ consistently" was a stretch but this is still a large number.

That's a good point. When I posted I hadn't even thought of us winning the west. The two bad losses to teams that we should have manhandled was the only thing I was thinking about.

Winning the west would be a nice feather in the cap for Orgeron and the coaching staff.

It’s bananas. At least we did it “our” way

Logan and Monroe and even Culp and Von Rosenberg are RSFR. Not kids right out of high school.

And the punter and kicker are also not what people think when talking about depending on freshman. We’re talking about the starting 22.

So we’ve gone from 20+ to 11, with 6 starting at some point. Rant myth cracking 101.

After Troy game I said to myself that I would take 7-5 if it was guaranteed. So I will stand by that. At the beginning of the year I hoped for 9-3. That would be great in my opinion. To me, the key is what does his recruiting look like going forward. Do recruits want to come play for a relatively unknown coach? That was my “concern” with O all along. So if he can stay top 7-8 or better, I’d be optimistic going forward

Just remember, most of those predictions took place prior to the massive pre-season attrition on the o-line. Back then, I was predicting 10-2, but post o-line attrition, it was looking more like an 8-4 year.

Fair enough, but a decent chunk of those are on the staff too.

In July? How many OL did we lose after July?

Did I say true freshmen anywhere? I also never mentioned anything about starting players. You seem to have reading comprehension issues. Classic rantard creating words where there weren't.

I'd very much like for someone to provide information any teams in the past (LSU or not) that have used this many freshmen (redshirt or true...) and that team's record and/or final ranking. Maybe snaps played by freshmen/total number of snaps. Of course that information is likely unattainable but you can't possibly think the outcome would be favorable.
