reminder: how Slive handled Hurricane Rita in 2005 for LSU v Tenn

a hurricane was projected to hit on Friday, so the SEC commissioner got on the phone with both schools on Thursday. any of that sound familiar?
LSU wanted to play Sunday, Tenn wanted Monday.
when the call ended we had a game on Monday.
no other games were cancelled, no future schedules were fricked with or changed. we played the game. the two schools couldn't agree on when to play it, so the commissioner settled that for us.
Slive conducted two conference calls with officials from the schools before making the announcement as parts of Louisiana were being evacuated Thursday.
"After reviewing all of the information, I felt this was the best decision for the game. The safety of our student-athletes, coaches and fans is our priority," Slive said. "I understand this puts a burden on LSU and its administration. However, the travel safety issues necessitate this decision."
usa today
fast forward to last week. sankey did nothing. he froze up, then took a week and still fricked up. the SEC is now run by a guy whose job is to make decisions, yet panics and cant make decisions.
im sure this will go great.

It really annoys me when people say that "LSU of all people should realize what a hurricane situation is like." We moved a home game to our opponents stadium, then played a game on Monday night because we were proactive in planning. Whether or not you think that Florida wanted to play this game or not, they were not proactive. They did not consider any other contingencies especially when LSU bent over backwards to play the game last weekend. We shouldn't have to cancel a home game because of their poor planning.

Amazing, huh? And the same thing would happen today. Sankey isn't weak. LSU is.

Yep, Sankey should get most of the blame for being a weak commissioner who didn't have the brass to step up and set a game for Sun or Mon.

How so, at the time LSU couldn't just show up in Gainesville and force UF to play. Monday would have been the most reasonable solution as it would have given plenty of time to prep the stadium if Gville was relatively unscathed. And there would have been time to call things off if the worse case scenario happened. Regardless, there was precedent for this situation.

I'm not saying Aleva did anything wrong. LSU is weak compared to Florida, Bama, Auburn in the SEC. This case right here is an example. LSU had to play Tenn on a Monday. Florida was allowed to look after it's own interest and delay this game. And afterward, Foley and Sankey have a nice public circlejerk about it.
LSU also got the short stick with the bridge schedules when Bama decided it'd rather not play Georgia or Florida.

quote:this is really the important part. make the plan for monday. if the storm is bad, and on monday theres 5 feet of water in the stadium with dead bodies floating through, i dont think we should play a football game like that. jmo.
And there would have been time to call things off if the worse case scenario happened.
if things are fine, we play. if not, reassess then.
to outright kill the game 15 hours before the storm arrived was the worst solution he could have come up with.
i think he just froze up and called it because he had no idea what else to do.

quote:bama played UGA last year and Fla the year before. Tenn is their traditional rival. of course thats gonna be their permanent cross-division game.

the only dumb part is that the rest of us have to have one.

Absolutely correct. But Florida didn't want to play the game. And Sankey is happy to do Foleys bidding. Florida was allowed to look after it's own interest. LSU did not get the same consideration in 2005.

Again, LSU gets jobbed.

quote:we really werent. Rita was projected to hit Friday but also could have lingered until Saturday. Skip wanted to play Sunday because it would be harder to arrange a night game on Monday so 3 days notice (classes were held and parking, among other things, would be very hard to organize).

from a safety standpoint, Monday was a perfectly reasonable call.
and remember, we gassed in the second half of that game anyway, and that was with one more day of rest. Sunday might have been worse.

I know, I'm referring to the bridge schedules a few years ago when TAM and Mizzou came in. Suddenly LSU was playing UGA while Bama got KY.
