I remember in the early days of the Saints in Tulane Stadium we got this called on us several times. The referee's actions would just egg the crowd on further to scream and boo and stomp on the steel stands. A couple of times the games were delayed for what seemed like a half hour. I remember one time against the Eagles and another I think against the Browns.

This was a big thing for Saints preseason games, I remember. Want to say it was '89? Saints crowd would get so loud they would keep calling penalties, so the next game they were passing out signs that say "YAY" on one side and "BOO" on the other.

Wish I had kept it.
Haha that's awesome.

That’s true. I was there and remember it clearly. It wasn’t the only time we ever got called for it either.

I remember it in the NFL and teams abused it. Bengals, I think vs. Saints, were backed up to goal line. Bengals QB, possibly Boomer Esiason, went under center three times. Said he couldn't hear, Saints were penalized, and ball was moved. NFL quickly realized it was a stupid rule and did away with it.

Man, I forgot about that. How crazy. If I recall, many stadiums still allowed noise makers.

I don’t think it was actually called in that game. Tom Tupa (Ohio State QB) continually asked for help quieting the crowd on their first drive. Referee kept allowing them to back off the ball, wait, restart the play clock and try again. They finally got the snap off, but no penalty was called. This is, of course, is my memory 35 years later.

If I recall correctly even in the 90’s they would give a warning. Wasn’t really a penalty but they wouldn’t penalize the other team for delay of game and then ask the crowd to be quiet like that would ever work lol.

It was called, but in most cases the officials would just let the crowd go on for a few minutes and let the offense back off a few times before enforcing it.

How long? I don't think there was any set time. Probably until they got pissed, then they would assess a delay of game penalty.

Does anyone know when it was abolished?

Lions crowd noise in 97 - Youtube

After 3rd warning, defensive team gets charged a timeout.

[quote]Their QB (Tom Tupa) screwed up bigtime on the first series by trying to "shush" the crowd. BIG MISTAKE. I know the refs warned us a couple times, don't remember if actually penalized. I do know the refs finally told Tupa to just "snap the damn ball!!!"[/quote

I was in the student section at that game. Was that the one where Tupa (QB) caught a pass in the end zone ?
