Ran across this article while looking for some info on the game. Was there, and still pissed off over the bs penalties that cost us a win. Interesting piece, all the same - not much changed in the press worshiping the Condoms, lol. LINK

That SC team WAS as advertised. They had All-PRO's all over their roster. I was there, and we were riped off. Mac's final year, we also played Bama when they were Number 1 and lost 3-0...two games against No. 1's and lost by a total of 8 points.
Wound up in Tangerine Bowl where we beat John Mackovic's Wake Forest team...

Good article and it was one of the most memorable games in Tiger Stadium history.

Dietzel's quote was interesting.

My, how times have changed.

Now students and many spirited spectators are afraid to even stand up and cheer and yell in case some shithead reports them to security and they are escorted out.

It looks like the present administration is determined to turn Death Valley into a silent den of fat cats and socialites.

I was at that game, my very 1st LSU game. Was a kickass game and rained the entire damn game.

Good article. I think its ironic that many people, me included, think the best game ever in Tiger Stadium was a loss, but there it is. So many memories from that game, it would take a book. But one of my favorites was going to the stadium and seeing someone in the old North Stadium dorm (over the student gates) with a commentary on USC. They had hung a clear garbage bag out the window, poured milk in the bottom and hung a sign that read "NOBODY LIKES A USED TROJAN!"

I posted this article over the summer, as that was one of my most memorable games from childhood.

Our identity at LSU was so different there, we were the scrappy, undersized bayou kids who played every down like life or death, but in the end, we just couldn't win the big one.

I used to honestly believe LSU would never win a NC in my lifetime. My, how times have changed.

The buildup that week in baton Rouge was amazing. Gym Nasium had a song/comedy bit on local radio. We KNEW USC was in for the fight of their lives.

My friend's dad scored 4 seats in the end zone, first row, upper section (overhang) and man did it get, and STAY loud.

In defeat, we were so proud of those guys.
It was a different era.

In John Ed Bradley's book, It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium, even on his death bed Cholly Mac was still replaying that game in his mind.

That reminds me of a house I appraised in Metairie back in the 90's that had purple and gold throughout the entire interior—purple and gold poke-dot carpet, purple and gold curtains, and even a purple and gold toilet seat. Keeping a straight face was all I could do. :jump1: :jump2:

A group of LSU fans met USC's plane at the airport and Tigerbaited them from the airport terminal to their bus. Then they followed them to their hotel, then Tigerbaited them inside. Then, they met them on game day and Tigerbaited them from their hotel to Tiger Stadium.

Ah, the 79 loss to Southern Cal. Apart from the egg we laid in that game, my most lasting memory from that night is when Trojan running back Charles White flipped off the student section at the end of the game. But you can't really blame him, considering the Trojans got pelted with condoms in pre-game warmups.

"the Trojans, who already have been proclaimed by three football coaches as the best college team ever"

Wow, each year the Condoms have had the best college football team EVER going back nearly 30 years! No wonder ESPN always speaks of the USC Dynasty!

Oh, yeah, and that facemask penalty was pure bullshite.

SC had won the national title the year before and probably had the best backfield in the history of college football so it wasn't that ridiculous to think that team might be really really good at the begining of the season

Obviously, they were great...but LSU was better that night...one huge bs penalty kept them from winning!

So was I. Only game I remember where I saw nothing but fingers (no tickets) on my way to the stadium.

Great link to the SI archives. Pulled up some other articles while I was there.

Me too...easily my most memorable TS experience in nearly 40 years of going to games. The stadium was just buzzing with electricity before kick-off, and the noise level was deafening throughout.

The team left it all on the field that night. Had the Tigahs been able to hold on, it would have been one of the biggest LSU upsets in the 100+ years of FB history at the Old War Skule.

My last semester at LSU. My ears are still ringing today. One incredible game.

I strained my vocal chords that night from yelling so loud and long. I good not speak for two weeks...total truth. I hope the crowd for the Bama game acts the same way.

I was there. I was a senior in high school, and it was the most consistently loud I can ever remember Tiger Stadium being. I don't think we sat down at halftime.

That was the gutsiest performance I have ever witnessed by a team that was clearly outmanned. I don't care what anyone says, I saw what I saw, and I saw one half of USC's line move before the snap on that 4th down play where LSU was flagged for the facemask. When we noticed the flag after the play, my dad and I were certain that's what it was for. How the refs missed that I'll never know.

It's funny how the USC highlights you can find on YouTube conveniently edit out that controversial play, because they know that it will show that half the line moved before the snap of the ball.
