re-watched the game yesterday. In my (very) unprofessional opinion 4 of those incomplete passes should have been caught

Some of BH's passes should have been caught, too.

Etling made an impact on the game. BH did not. That is the difference.

I've been outspoken in my defense of BH from the baseless criticism, but this is the main reason I've state that Etling deserves to start. On an offense that has struggled mightily regardless of the QB, having a vocal, high-energy, new blood type of guy like Etling should give him the nod. While I don't believe Etling IS any better/accurate/efficient than Harris at this point, Etling gets the benefit of the doubt from the fan base and the team because he looks the part. He moves better. He's vocal and seems to keep the energy up. I haven't see that translate into better QB play, but it did seem to have an effect on the entire team and certainly the home crowd.

He should and very likely will be the guy to start against MSU for those reasons.

Not in the JSU game. 2 of the 3 incompletions were uncatchable.

Which part of my casual optimism would you quantify as freaking out?

The thing I like about the 2nd and 7 play is watching him go through the progressions.

And regardless of drops or no drops, the passes were much more on target than we are used to seeing.

The checkdown was perfectly thrown. As others have pointed out millions of times over the years, that throw is not as easy as it looks. We have seen it done poorly so many times, even when completed if the back can't catch it in stride.

Etling was more on target against JSU than Harris was. Harris simply didn't have it and needed to come out.

However, on what amounted to 19 drop backs (15 actual throws), Etling had 6 bad passes. Depending on how you view the 1st half INT with no time remaining, Harris had 6 or 7 bad passes out of 26 dropbacks (22 actual throws) against Wisconsin. The idea that Etling was more accurate than Harris in the game is a myth.

The difference between Etling and Harris, up to this point, is that A) Etling simply looks better doing it from a fundamental standpoint and B) Etling strung together a nice quarter - 6/8 is better than we've seen from Harris in any stretch this year.

First it was two passes that should have been caught.
Then it was three.
Now it is four.
Soon it will be 5-6-or-7.
Eventually someone will declare Etling was 14/14 and 3-4 TDs. This is how cows follow a bell-leader and then stack up in front of a new gate... it is ridiculous.

I guess we should have the sports world in HS, NCAA, and NFL change the way they keep stats on passing. No more attempts/completions/ints. It will be attempts/completions/should-have-beens/ints.

Every QB in the country has passes dropped. If it makes you feel better, than by all means warp the way statistics are kept to feel all warm and fuzzy. But for me, I'll pump the brakes and be a little critical of 6/14, 100 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 lost fumble... at least until he has a good game against an SEC team.

Be careful. The rant does like when you employ sound reasoning.

You could be right, but my perception is different. I just saw so much more touch, which is a subset of accuracy to me.

Agreed, however the Guice drop alone would have added more than 40 yards and likely a touchdown. Guice has better hands than that. He ran a great route and was wide open. Certainly Dupre had multiple drops again. Danny displayed much better accuracy than Harris has generally shown.

Harris had issues with touch passes last year, but so far in 2016, particularly against Wisconsin, he was fine. Drag plays across the middle, a screen, the bubble pass for the TD, the dump off to Fournette while being pressured, etc. were all well executed with appropriate touch.

The part Harris has continued to struggle with is his 5-10 yard quick hitches. I'm not sure if he rushes those throws or what, but he had 3 high passes to Dupre against Wisconsin on essentially the same route.

I've got no problem if people can't get the perception against JSU or the end of the 2015 campaign out of their head, but the facts of the matter are that the actual passes have been just as good as what we've seen from Etling. The difference is that Etling just seems more composed and makes it look better, but the actual execution - the ball being on time, in the right spot, to the right receiver, etc. - has been just as good/bad with Harris this year as it has been with Etling.

I hope Etling can provide some clear separation on Saturday.

Based on the fact that you have actual analysis, and I have, well, jack, I will defer.

It is fricking comical how Bama fans think we should ignore all of the positive we saw in Etling's performance and the "6-14" stat line is all that should matter.

The same fan base that thinks LF should be defined on his "19-31" stat line against Bama in 2015.

But even 60% completion opens it up for our stable of backs.

50% is serviceable. 55% is "decent" - 60% - at least on a consistent basis, is excellent. That's how fine the line is. "Even 60%" diminishes the fact that a 60% passer, even with the 16 or 18 passes we throw in a Les Miles Offense is good for about 1 more win per year, at least in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. Blee dat.

Completion percentage is even less important for a team that tries to establish the run game in and game out like LSU does. First of all, they are throwing fewer passes than a more balanced team so that in and of itself, diminishes the importance. Second, they generally throw a lot low percentage more deep balls to keep defenses from stacking the box. What LSU needs to do is be more efficient in 1st and 3rd down passing.

I don't disagree with that at all.

The broader concept is to "stop wasting downs" - and these passes are a big part of that.

You're right. Our receivers are not doing a god damned thing to help out our QBs.
