Is there a certain date that you have to declare your redshirts, I would have to think we would have a good bit this year.

I don't believe there is a requirement to declare red shirt status. Besides officially red shirt status cannot be bestowed until the end of the year for obvious reasons.

I thought it had to be made before season started because redshirts can not play in games if they are redshirted that season?

There is nothing to be "declared" for getting a redshirt. Case in example: Travis Daniels did not play all year and was gonna be a RS in 2001. But cpl of DB's get hurt in the SEC-CG and when Saban asked him if he would mind sacrificing his redshirt he agreed.

You're right they can't play. I think the decision to red shirt is one the coaches at each school make before the start of the season but they are not required to submit a list to the NCAA. At the completion of the season those names are then submitted to have the NCAA grant formal red shirt status on those players who did not play during the year.

Players I expect to redshirt...

QB Chris Garrett
RB Michael Ford
RB Drayton Calhoun
OT Stavion Lowe
OG Josh Williford
DT Josh Downs
DE Bennie Logan
LB Lamin Barrow
LB Tahj Jones
LB Josh Johns

The rest I think will play or have a great shot of playing.

I am still amazed by how much confusion exist over the redshirt rule.
The how many games can you play in and how late in the season can you play and still redshirt is a good topic for several pages.

Yea, its a fairly straight forward rule until you get into medical red shirts and then it becomes discretionary.

The surgery is not serious. He can have it and be playing at least special teams very easily early on.

nah, you missed my point. you can play someone for a few minutes and if they have a season ending injury that results in the player missing all but those few minutes they played you can get the medical redshirt.

lsu was going to do it with jj last season but they ended up needing him. I forget which game it was, but he played 1 set of mop up then had a serious "injury" in practice, but was magically able to come back and play the last 2 games

I think Miles made it pretty clear he wants Loston to play ASAP

is he even able to practice yet?

regardless of the reports from his h.s. coach miles barely sounds confident loston will be a tiger this year much less having meaningful game time.
