Random 2013/14 Offense Observations = 2015 Marked Improvement (Long)

We are closer to Ohio State style offense then you think. I am not a fan of LM as an offensive coach, but I am starting to think he might be right. Les believes 3 things can happen when you throw the ball and 2 are bad.

These are some off the top observations regarding LSU offensive tendencies from 2014 and 2013.

Cam did wonders for our skill players in 2013 and we saw plays, skill-sets and play-calling that we have never seen before. His off-season workouts made QB and WRs NFL ready. Les has confidence in Cam and will let him run the offense with a more seasoned QB.

LSU is not a zone blocking team. Our OL dominates in a power scheme. Zone blocking is best for undersized, quick linemen and neutralizes our strengths. Our OL switched from 30-50% zone blocking to a 100% power scheme against Florida this year and we started owning the line of scrimmage.

I believe the spread alone is winning football but not championship football(OSU proved that last night). I believe in no huddle, power blocking scheme with multiple sets. Multiple receivers opens up running lanes.

I believe that this is what you will see from LSU next year. Here is why-

Les was conservative early in the year due to QB, but we still used spread tendencies and no huddle, especially when Harris was in (I am not sure why we use a huddle 95% of the time with Jennings). Zone blocking was not effective.

Harris did a great job against MSU and Les gave Cam and Harris full-reign against Auburn. Had this game been at home against a team that doesn’t practice against the spread every day, Harris may have been the QB for the rest of the year. Harris was not ready, especially on the road.

Power scheme, conservative, less chance of QB turnover at Florida and we were successful on the road.

With a week off and bowl practice, we saw some of Cam’s influence. Throws to the TE, jet sweep, some no huddle, etc. I am not sure why they had to wait until a bye week to incorporate some new wrinkles that were effective. The key is that Cam’s influence worked well.

It doesn’t matter who our QB is next year. I think we will see marked improvement in the QB and WR play because of another off-season with Cam. I hope it is Harris or Braxton Miller, but I think Jennings can be very successful. The key for our offense next year is the return of OL so that we can maintain a power scheme.

We should be solid on D and have a better rotation of DL even without Hunter. If we get the right guy at DC I think we are a lot closer to playing OSU championship style FB than many people would think.
