Head-to-head..LSU vs Bama..Miles vs Saban..razor close.

Bama 17-1 SEC last two yrs..LSU 8-8 SEC..not so much.

Bama won their recent Ole Miss close games..LSU not.

I think this is where Miles water got warm.

Saban Miles comparison, head to head:

Based on the above reference and the 3 games played, the two are pretty much even.

Overall, no coach winning at almost an 80% rate while playing in the SEC is a "bad coach".

One would have to off their meds to see the results put up by Miles in 5+ seasons as equating to that of a "bad coach."

for me personally, I still "like the guy," but the clock management and other decisions that bit us so hard last season suddenly placed a lot of things in a context other than the one in which I'd originally seen them. Whereas I originally viewed '07 as the year of the "gunslinger," the "Mad Hatter," and "Lesticles," last season made me reevaluate so much of '07 and wonder if the wild decisions that worked out for us then were not just equally bad decisions for which we did not suffer because of luck or whatever.

I'm not a Saban fan, but he doesn't suffer from similar decision-making...that I can recall, at least.

don't think this comparison can be drawn. Yes, we were even in those games, but in the last two years Saban is 16-0 in the SEC while Miles was 8-8. That is why people are upset.

This. Bama winning a MNC and going undefeated in league play really bothers the LSU faithful.

Definitely not "bad"
Probably "good"
Not "great"

He actually isn't a bad coach, but don't try and convince anyone on here otherwise. The vast majority on here only know how to recycle old, worn out jokes about Les Miles, make fun of him using the word "want", and take the phrase "player development" out of context to mean something completely different.

Well it might take a couple of more years to reveal the answer to that question. Nobody really knows what kind of coach Saban can be after four years. Maybe his schtick starts to wear on his players.
Most Alabama fans and some LSU fans don't give Miles the credit he deserves for his record and the Nationl Championship HIS team won in his first three years. They want to discount it and say he won with Saban's players. However, they fail to recognize that Saban went 9-4 in the record books (and 8-5 on the field) and was 7 points from going 6-7 with all that same talent in his last year at LSU. The record books for that year reflect that we won a home game against Oregon State that year, but Saban's team did not beat them, Oregon State beat themselves when there kicker, one of the best in the nation that year, missed three extra points and or field goals that game. The great Saban and all of his talent he left Coach Miles was also trailing the mighty Troy team with less than two minutes to go, before we got lucky and hit a long pass to set up a score at the end of the game. And then there was the three point victory over the MIGHTY Ole Miss Rebels. Miles record has slipped after those first three years, just as Saban's did after his first three years at LSU. While at Oklahoma St. Miles proved he could win with less talent by beating Oklahoma twice when they were ranked in the top 3 (one of only two games Stoops has lost at home at Oklahoma). And both Miles and Saban have proven they can recruit well. So I say the jury is still out. Maybe we know after this year or maybe the next.

Scoop,

Let me start with this statement - I think Saban is the best coach in the NCAAF no question. He beats the teams he should beat, he kills the teams he should kill and his teams are almost always up for the game and well prepared.

Miles vs Saban - In my mind if you only consider the games we have played it is virtually a draw. Neither has coached a clear advantage and I see the same type of game again this year.

Miles as a coach. He certainly does not get enough credit from the National Media, Rival SEC fans but especially LSU fans. Why you may ask. It is a multitude of screwy things that he does, and a very good friend from Ok St told me this would be the case. Examples

1) Clock management - rightfully covered and criticized numerous times
2) keeping teams we should blow out in the game for far too long
3) questionable utilization of our talent _ which he recruited I might add as a positive
4)continuing to stick with poorly performing players despite having seemingly viable options on the bench - JJ - Jl perfect example
5) the co-defensive coordinator fiasco, which he has fixed with Chavis
6) the Crowton issue - well discussed daily

Trying to summarize, his record here at LSU certainly is very, very good but many things he does leaves our fans baffled.

I think he his a very good coach but not a great coach. If he improves his performance, maybe he will get to the great catergory before his tenure is over. IMHO

bama scoop, you really seem like a nice guy and i like reading your posts on here. you have more sense than half of the lsu posters on here BUT what in the holy hell were you thinking when you posted this. are you having a bad day and looking for some bizarre way to feel better. guess it's better than going stomp on a red ant bed. same result w/o the chance of a sting.

and yes, your argument is a good one. it's just that your audience basically hates miles and if he cured cancer and effected world peace, it would piss them off.

He's not Scoop. Your post is spot-on IMO. I'd take Saban over Miles but not by the landslide some on here talk about. He owns a dozen victories in 9 seasons over coaches on the top 25 Rivals list he was left off of again. Les is one of the top 25 coaches of the 120 as far as I am concerned. Nick is at or near the top of that list having taken two programs to the promised land. People that are ranking Petrino, Mullen and the like ahead of Miles is a joke.

Scoop,

one other thing I meant to address is that I agree with you that Saban will not be in Al too much longer, especially if he wins another NC this year which is a real possibility. His big thing is building a team that is struggling then he wants another challenge. I am not sure if he wants back into pro football but in his book he lists Penn St as one of his ideal jobs. I think that after this season or next Joe Pa will finally retire or visit the other Happy Vally and Saban will be the man to take his place.

He certainly does not get enough credit from the National Media

He's been unlucky on some questionable calls lately.
Saban ran the fake punt in NCG and got away with it, and Brown had a clock issue and got away with it, while Miles is under the media microscope.
Seems like the media are a gang of schoolyard bullies and CLM and LSU are their punching bag for the moment.
WVU may turn things around, but I'm sure Marshal ansd Terps will be brought up to discredit LSU.

With respect to all the people talking about Miles' SEC record Vs. Saban. I think something happens to a team after a loss no matter who the coach is.

Teams like Alabama, LSU, Tenn. and others in this league are playing for national championships not just good records. Look at Alabama in his first year after the LSU loss, the team completely fell apart. We have yet to see what this team will do when facing a loss since his first year.

Just like the Sugar Bowl against Utah, our players didn't give a damn about that game, they wanted to win the NC and lost that chance in the SEC CG.

Our schools are about NC's not good records. I am not saying that is right but that is the truth.

I don't think he will stay that long. He may stay a couple of more years but he looks a little restless to me this year. His press conferences are more subdued. It is like he knows he can do this anywhere he goes so what is the big deal.

I personally thing that he is the kind of guy that can't handle failure and in his mind he failed in the NFL. It would not surprise me to see him go to Dallas.

I do not think he would leave Alabama for another college gig like some people think but I think the Miami thing eats at him.

Just my opinion.

Scoop, I've read a lot of your posts and I admire your tact and honesty. But when I read this post, I was floored because I have been saying the exact same thing since January.

I think Saban is the best at what he does: produce winning teams. I believe that his failure at Miami gnaws at him because he has failed at the highest level, head coaching in the NFL.

I think he made up his mind to leave LSU after the Oregon St. game '04 when the fans were booing Marcus Randall on national TV. I think the Bama fan base may rival LSU for passion and I don't know how they will react the next time Bama doesn't win the NC.

I think Miles' popularity problem with LSU fans rests with two men: RP and Saban. Miles had the balls to kick the SECCG winning QB off the team, I respect him for it. If Saban was at a big time program in another conference, we'd be having this conversation about him regarding meeting him in the NC game, but it's just bad luck he's in the same division as us.

I like Miles as our head coach and I think he is an honorable man and a great recruiter...as soon as he hires the right OC it'll be on.

Good luck every Saturday except Nov 6.
