Question for older Tiger fans: When did freshmen start playing for LSU?

The latest iteration of the “LSU’s greatest running back” thread got me wondering about the freshman team. It’s hard to compare athletes from different generations for many reasons – and one big one is career stats aren’t comparable for guys that only had three years of eligibility.
I have very faint memories of references to the freshman team from the mid-70s. If I remember correctly the freshmen would play on Friday, sometimes (or usually?) at the visiting varsity team’s venue.
Can any of you old-timers shed some light on the freshman football team? When did it exist? Did they play a full schedule (complementing the varsity sked)? Were the games worth watching?

Not old enough to remember that but from what I gather it resembled the "jv" team in high school. Still did everything the varsity did but just played a day early

The freshmen were part of the varsity squad in football – no separate games or practices – just cannon fodder.
In basketball they had a separate freshman team that played before the varsity games. People would pack the Cow Place to watch the Pistol, then empty the place when the varsity played.

So the references to freshman games are for basketball only?

no
freshman weren't allowed to play any sport until the mid 70's I think
could be wrong of course but the first freshman I remember having a big impact was early 80's

1980 or 81, I believe. I know they weren't eligible for the 79 season, because Alan Risher played on the Freshman team.

NCAA Division One Freshmen could play varsity ball until 1954. The NCAA then changed the rules and freshman were ineligible to play. The rule was rescinded in 1973.

during the years when freshmen could not play varsity ball, they played four (4) games. I remember when UK freshmen football beat UTk freshmen, at Lexington. I actually went to all the UK football games, for a while there. I suppose I was in law school.
Mainly I remember the beer and women.

Hmm, I guess I was wrong, then. LSU did have a freshman team in the late seventies, early eighties, though.

No they did not. You are mistaken.

I'm not mistaken about them having a freshman team in 79. A friend of mine was on the Ole Miss freshman team and they played the LSU freshmen in Bernie Moore stadium on a weekday afternoon. Risher was the QB for LSU. I was there and saw it with my own eyes. Freshmen may have been eligible at that time, but there was also a freshman team.

In the 60's and early 70's, many fans were intrigued by the football fortunes of the "Baby Bengals."
My freshman year at LSU, a number of highly regarded freshman played on the team. Terry Robiskie and Robert Dow are two that I remember.
I remember quite well driving home from Baton Rouge with a friend the morning after our loss to Alabama on Thanksgiving night feeling that the "next three years are going to be special" "we'll see championships before we leave school" in large part because of the performance that year of the freshmen.
Mike Miley left for the baseball draft, the change of offensive system to the veer produced mixed results, and we graduated in '77 remembering the "good ole days" that had seemingly ended in 1973.

I know the NCAA allowed freshmen to play in 71 or 72 (see previous post), but that didn't mean schools had to abolish their established practices.
I'm curious about the existence and exploits of LSU's freshman football team, and when it ceased to exist.

there were indeed bona fide "freshman teams" that tended to play an abbreivated schedule -- maybe 5 or six games a year. A college such as LSU would sometimes play games against a JC or military school--not a lot of travel.
The current freshman eligibility rules came into play in the fall of 1972. LSU continued to have "JV" football games --played at Bernie Moore-- until the mid 1980's.
Because of WWII and Korea, the NCAA did allow freshman to play varsity in the 1940's and until the late 1950's. But there was a weird rule that in a player's senior year he couldn't participate in post season play which caused many teams to pass on bowl games or the NCAA tournament in basketball or baseball which then led to freshmen being ineligible for varsity play.
LSU's freshman basketball team would play a game before the varsity, typically against the varsity's opponent particularly if it was an SEC game.

Hmmm, i recall that 79 team very well. The freshman must've played some games if you say you were there. I never knew about those games. Interesting

I remember going to an LSU freshman game in 77 or 78 against Tulane in NO, so it had to be a bit after that when dropped the freshman teams.

I do remember about '69 that Pete Maravich could not play on the varsity team and played on a freshman team first at the old Cow Palace south campus area. The varsity played 2nd. I remember it being packed with fans for the freshman game and then many leaving for the varsity. Embarrassing at the time. I remember Apple Sanders playing on the varsity. Pete played with him the next year and two more. There was no leaving early for the pros then. Think Freshmen were allowed to play about '71 to '73 .

Tupelo,
I'm pretty sure that Apple Sanders and Fig Newton were both a couple of years behind Pete. So they would not have been on the varsity while Pete was playing freshman ball. What you noted about people attending the jv game and then leaving is true, I believe.

Depressing for a couple of reasons, I guess. I was there so I qualify as an old-timer. Also, LSU - Tulane was still a rivalry back then.
